Great family or business getaway

I traveled to San Diego for a funeral and some business and found the hotel to be in an ideal location and made the trip enjoyable. It was quiet, comfortable and within minutes of driving distance to any of the attractions you may want to see. I personally enjoyed the USS Midway CV-41 Museum.

Great location, great hotel!

This hotel very nice. It felt more like a resort. We had several people in our party staying there, and all of the rooms were nice and had great views. My 12 year old son enjoyed the heated pool and hot tub. The grounds are just gorgeous, and the room was very quiet; even though ours faced the restaurant, we didn't hear any noise. Beautiful koi pond and see if you can catch the parrots out on their roosts! Loved this hotel and would definitely go back!

Wonderful stay for my young family

Grounds were beautiful! Extremely well maintained tropical theme grounds, complete with huge 9 ft deep pool and 12 person hot tub. Free 2 hr beach cruiser bike rental, putting green, and ping pong table. Walking distance to great bakeries and restaurants...plus a boardwalk just up the block! Perfect spot for relaxing! Rooms came with microwave, coffee maker and refrigrator, and seemed to have been revamped not too long ago. Would go back again and again!

Having fun at Humphreys

This was a Spring Break getaway for my family and I and we were not disappointed. The staff was great, the grounds were beautiful, the pool was awesome, and the location was to die for. The room with two beds was comfy, although the furniture seemed a little dated. It's location was key because it's surrounded by great places to eat and enjoy San Dietgo.

Great Location, Clean but Needs Room Updating

The location is absolutely perfect for a San Diego vacation. Everything you'll want to do is within a 15-20 minute drive, and the airport only 5-10 minutes (but without the noise). The hotel itself it pretty nice from the outside but the rooms need updating from carpet, beds, decor, etc. Having said that, the room cleaning staff is top notch and work hard. The kids will love the pool and everyone will enjoy the meticulously kept, lush grounds. You feel like you're in Hawaii with all the vegetation and mature palms, etc. Two resident Macaws hang out near the pool, which was pretty neat for the kids. Price is right, just hope they upgrade the rooms before we come back.

great location...free bike rentals a plus

While a little dated, this property has the location and charm to make it a great destination. A recent renovation also helped to update the room, which included two flat screen TVs...nice! We received a free upgrade to a two room suite, which was really great as there were four of us on the trip and the added space was appreciated, along with the pocket doors that created two distinct living areas. We will definitely consider this property again when we return to SD---great location, close to beaches, the Zoo and Old Town. Staff was helpful and professional. The free bike rentals were great as the island is not too big to explore in an hour or so.

Sub Par

My family stayed at Humphrey's for a weekend trip to San Diego. I booked an over night stay in a King premium suite, and when we arrived they told my husband we were "upgraded'. Upon arriving in a room it was quickly evident that we were down graded to a double queen room. We did not have a bath tub, just a stand up shower. For the price I was expecting a very nice hotel but ended up in a mediocre, tropical themed "suite" with a "tropical" view(a small balcony facing the parking lot) We've stayed at Best Westerns and other chain hotels for the same price, but the quality of Humphrey's was sub par. I felt like our room was a bit beaten up and the heating vents needed a filter change (my 2 year old coughed all night every time the heat kicked on). Disappointments aside, we requested room service and the hotel staff was very timely and professional; the food was a bit pricey but we had no complaints, it was delicious and fresh. I will likely never return to Humphrey's.

Exceptional all around!

We were met by friendly, helpful staff; even the room cleaners were friendly. Beautiful view of the marina, and the inside rooms had a wonderful Polynesian view and of the pool. We hope to stay there again! It made our San Diego vacation complete. In the computer room there were helps as to what to see and maps to print. Shelter Island was a relaxing vacation as well, watching the ships come in and out of the harbor, people fishing, and people sailing and canoeing.

Filippi's in Little Italy was fantastic, authentic Italian food just like my mother-in-law's. You can share a meal; it's about double the size one person can eat. Go early; the line forms in the Italian deli.

Easy, relaxing, beautiful vacation.

This hotel was wonderful. The hotel was beautiful, our room was clean and comfortable (free WiFi, too), the staff was VERY friendly and helpful, and the location was the best part - Shelter Island (really a peninsula) is quieter and slower but very close to so many attractions in San Diego. They even offered free bicycle use, which was awesome, though we never did get around to using them (everything we wanted to visit required driving). Prior to this, we had gone to DisneyWorld for 6 years in a row, as a work conference was held there every year, so we were isolated from having to make travel arrangements: Disney Magic Express bus to/from the airport, stayed in a hotel on park grounds, etc. That was always so easy that I had some trepidation booking this trip. Any fears were unfounded. This vacation was very easy, and that is due to this wonderful hotel and the friendly people we encountered here, and virtually everywhere in San Diego. We didn't want to go home when the trip was over. We stayed for a week and visited Disneyland (fun, but it doesn't compare to DisneyWorld), the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Coronado, Silver Strand Beach, Laguna Beach, Old Town, La Jolla, a bunch of malls (I have a 13-year old daughter), the Fender guitar factory in Corona, and lots of restaurants and beaches. I think our best times were just driving up Highway 1, enjoying the scenery and stopping at beaches and little shops along the way. As far as "cons," our hotel room was small (we booked one of the basic rooms), and we could hear people in other rooms easily - I could hear someone in another room's phone conversation. Also, we had plans to tour LA while we were in CA, but those didn't pan out so well, largely because the congested drive from SD to LA takes so much time. Also, for you shoppers, don't expect bargains. At least we found none. The view at the hotel restaurant was spectacular, but the food was just ok. Our dining experiences varied radically, since we didn't know where to go, but it was never boring, and that's a good thing! Oh yeah, it cost $10/day to park our rental car in the hotel parking lot. Overall, as small-town Midwesterners whose prior vacation experiences have largely been hand-held, Disney vacations, this was very easy. We booked the whole thing through Orb*** - flights, room, rental car, all for one price. We flew into SD, took an airport shuttle to the rental car facility, picked up our car (little orange Kia Soul, which I thought was appropriately little, sporty/quirky and fun) and followed their directions to our hotel, and for the rest of the week, we just bummed around, using my iPhone as a GPS, seeing sights and relaxing. I can't think of an easier, more enjoyable way for a newcomer to visit San Diego than this. We'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Skip the attractions (Disney, SeaWorld, SD Zoo, LegoLand, etc.). CA (driving up the coast, checking out the shops and beaches, swimming in the ocean, etc.) is so much more fun - and it's cheaper! Both my 13-year old daughter and I felt the most fun we had was just bumming around, checking out this beautiful state and so many interesting, friendly people.
