A poetic combination of sol and mar, the Spanish words for sun and sea, Hotel Solamar is a name that captures the allure of its San Diego setting - an area rich with the sun and proximity to the ocean. Hotel Solamar is the epitome of urban coastal chic. The decor, radiating light and warmth, is only eclipsed by the sunny personalities of the staff with their bright smiles and a welcoming spirit.
From sunrise to sunset, the goal of the day is fun and ease - even for business travelers - in a setting of style and comfort. As the sun sets the daylight may fade, but the heat continues well into the evening with a lively and sophisticated scene at LOUNGEsix on Solamar Terrace or coastal California dining at Jsix. From check-in to check-out, Hotel Solamar is the equivalent of calm waters and sunny skies.
The 235 guestrooms and suites provide the perfect space to relax and create with overstuffed chairs, LCD flat-screen TV's, opening windows and a fully stocked honor bar. Each room offers welcome amenities, such as Aveda bath products, plush robes, laptop friendly safes and spacious work areas with ergonomic chairs. Adjacent to the hotel guests will be enticed by Jsix Restaurant featuring Executive Chef Christian Graves' enlightened menu serving Coastal Cuisine guided by the principles of sustainability and inspired by California farms and the region's coastline.

Great, convenient location
Seattle traveler Oct 26, 2009
Hotel Solamar is in a perfect location, situated right in the Gaslamp district, and within easy walking distance to many ... excellent restaurants/clubs (even in heels). The service was great - every single hotel employee we encountered, from the valets to the desk clerks, was helpful and friendly. The one thing that could be improved on is the sound-proofing in the rooms. We didn't expect to have to listen to other guests yelling and slamming doors after 3am on a Monday morning - made it difficult to get sleep before we had to catch our flight out at 9.

I was staying at a more traditional hotel on the water front. Something a little funky and in the mix is what I wanted and ... Hotel Solamar was a great choice in the Gaslight District. Just a couple of blocks from great eateries, and an active downtown. But far enough so the nightlife did not disturb when I was ready to sleep. Rooftop bar was too cool. I highly recommend.

There are plenty of places within the Gaslamp district that offer happy hours and great breakfasts (The Broken Yolk) that are a lot less costly than eating at the hotel. Gaslamp Strip Club is an amazing place to go for a nice steak dinner!

Solid Hotel
San Diego Sep 14, 2009
Great location in the Gaslamp section of town. If you park a hybrid car and use the valet, the daily parking rate is 50% ... off. Very solid rooms and very clean. WiFi is free and the signal was very good. Every morning you can receive the NY Times or the WSJ. The coffee in the lobby is excellent and every 5PM there was a wine cocktail hour. The pool is puny and the sundeck is loud and cramped. The fitness room is no bigger than a walk in closet. A solid choice in hotels.

My husband and I stayed here for six days/nights for our honeymoon. We must admit, when we walked into the room we were VERY ... pleased!! The place was spotless and very spacious!! We had a king deluxe room with a jacuzzi tub, so we cannot say what the other rooms were like but ours was awesome. The hotel also offers a free wine hour for guests from 5-6pm every evening which is a definite perk and made my husband become a wine drinker! I was told by a hotel staff member that they switch the brands/types of wines monthly..which is pretty cool. Everyone at the hotel was very friendly and helpful....it doesn't get much better than this!

The staff was friendly but not over friendly. The housekeepers were very friendly and greeted you. The rooms were very ... small but clean. The bed slept good. The showerhead was wonderful. The only thing that was available was coffee and water, when you went downstairs. There was nothing available for non-coffee drinkers. It seem more for business travelers than people on vacation. No readily information was available for example: how to get around the city or the highlights of the city. There was no phone books available because they went "green". They could look the number up for you and connect you. The only problem was you could not do any searching for yourself. We could not enjoy the pool after a long day of sightseeing. We felt like it was not a family like atmosphere. We do realize that it was located in the nightlife zone.

The Broken Yolk was wonderful. Great service, great food, and did not have to wait long to receive your food. If you want to take a cab because the walk is long try Hob Nob Hill. The food is excellent and the service is wonderful.

California Dreaming in San Diego. We stayed in the Hotel Solimar within the Gas Light district of town. Our stay centered ... upon potential University candidates for our college bound high school senior. Hotel Solimar was impecable, friendly and casual with a refined edge for urban art decor. The beds are very comfortable, pillows clean and downy and the room details most thoughtful. Small touches like a mirror floating off the wall with soft back lighting renders a fun and surprising presentation. A very nice find!

I had called ahead a few weeks before to change my spa room king bed to a 2 queen beds. Upon arriving I was told there are ... not any spa rooms w/ 2 beds, this was not explained to me on the phone so I was disappointed and called orbitz who called the hotel management but nothing ever came of it, and nobody from the hotel even bothered to contact me. On the 3rd day as I was taking a shower the towel rack fell off the wall

A fabulous Find
Mauilu Aug 2, 2009
The location in the Gaslamp District was ideal! No need for a car. However, if you do have a car, I suggest parking it at ... the parking lot across the street from the hotel for $15.00/night instead of paying the pricey $35.00/night at the hotel. This hotel has a very good 'feel' about it - Totally fantastic decor - hip, cool, sophisticated casual. Fourth floor level with outside pool, cabanas, firepits, food and bar with glowing colored lights. Complimentary coffee/tea hour in the mornings, icecream treats in the afternoon and wine from 5-6pm! Loved it, loved it. Request any room ending in "10" will give you a larger room, about extra 90 sq feet of sitting space. Will definitely seek out other Kimpton Hotels.

My wife and I stayed at the Solamar for 4 days/3 nights and we could not be happier. Although the rooms are a bit on the ... smaller side, they were very clean and comfortable. You could not beat the location of this hotel. Tons of restaurants/bars within walking distance. While there, we also took advantage of their 5pm wine hour which was fantastic and gave us an opportunity to meet other guests.Jsix, the restaurant inside the hotel served excellent food (try the burgers) and [...] the bartender served up some great drinks. The bar located on the 4th floor was also nice but definitely go on a Fri/Sat when there are more guests. Petco Park is also 2 blocks away and we attended a Padres game which was also enjoyable since they had fireworks after the game on Fri.All in all, we hope to be back soon and were very happy with our stay.

Awesome hotel in great location!! If you don't plan on really exploring San Diego outside of downtown/gaslamp this is the ... place for you. Great rooftop pool/bar with reasonable prices on food and drinks(big fan of the turkey/avacado sandwhich). Two blocks walk to the MTS stop in front of the convention center. All the bars/restaruants on fifth st. one block away. The only downside would be the absurd cost for valet parking, which is the only option. Other than that, we loved and will be back!

The room was awesome. It was very clean! I had read that there was a jetted tub in the room, and it actually did meet my ... expectations. We stayed in the virtuoso suite, which wasn't as big as we expected. But still a great room. I was a little disappointed however because my girlfriend informed me that she followed the link from the website to email the concierge and they never responded. I was getting home from deployment and she wanted to see if she could have the room set up a little more romantic for the two of us along with a few other questions. And like I said, they never responded.

This beautiful hotel is located in the Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego has complimentary coffee and tea in the morning as well ... as complementary wines and sangria in the afternoon. The staff was exceeding friendly and helpful. They were knowledgeable about attractions in the area and offered suggestions for ethnic restaurants. The Valet parking was quick and friendly. Located within walking distance of shopping and restaurants, trolley lines, the convention center, Petco Park and beautiful San Diego Bay. The pool is small but perfect for cooling off while enjoying your favorite beverage. Not the best for lap swimming. The pool is located outside on the roof of the 4th floor with a bar and several options for relaxing in sun or shade. The environment is probably not the best for small children due to the bar atmosphere.

We chose this Hotel Solamar for our 3 day road trip up to San Diego for some family fun. This place is great for ... everything. Great location - <2 blocks from Padres PETCO stadium, shopping, great dining. Although the fitness area is small, there's not much of a need for it with the San Diego weather. Despite being (overly) dog friendly, the rooms, facilities, and outdoor surroundings were very clean. The restaurant was outstanding, especially when compared to other hotel - affiliated dining establishments. The hotel staff were great. Would've been nice to have complimentary or reduced - priced parking for hotel patrons. Its a bit pricey, but no more so than any other hotel in the area. Will be back for sure.
