Historic San Diego hotel gives guest a glimpse of the past

The hotel's oak grand staircase, marble lobby and antique furnishings transport guests to the 19th century. Just steps from the San Diego Convention Center, the Horton Grand Hotel today delights guests with charming ambiance, friendly service and a fantastic location near Petco Park and the bars, restaurants and shopping of the Gaslamp Quarter.
Highlights
- Listed on the National Register of Historic Places
- Unique Victorian-style guest rooms feature hand-carved armoires, fireplaces
- Located in San Diego's historic Gaslamp Quarter

Rooms
Some of America's great historic figures -- Wyatt Earp, Babe Ruth and President Benjamin Harrison -- stayed at the original hotels that make up today's Horton Grand Hotel. Follow in their footsteps by staying in one of the hotel's 132 guest rooms and 24 grand rooms. City views and Victorian-inspired furnishings establish unmistakable sense of place. All rooms feature fireplaces, some have French doors that lead to private balconies overlooking the hotel courtyard. Wi-Fi Internet access is available (fees apply).
Features
After a long day of business or sightseeing, unwind with a drink at The Palace Bar at the Horton Grand Hotel. Be sure to stop by the front lobby and say hello to Sunshine, a life-size papier-mache horse from the saddle shop that previously occupied the building's ground floor.
Hit the Gaslamp Quarter, home to approximately 200 bars, restaurants and nightclubs. Just across the street from the Horton Grand Hotel, FLUXX nightclub has hosted an amazing roster of A-list celebrities. For something slightly more low-key, Cafe 222 is a great place for people watching over breakfast or lunch.

Super Helpful Staff
We arrived super early, too early to check in. The staff recommended a really great breakfast joint. Then we walked to Seaport Village and took a "duck" tour. The staff at the Horton Grand was always there to give us helpful information.

Overcharged guest
Horton Grand Hotel
Ok, except they would mis quote prices of parking then double charge and mischarge for things. When you would ask them about it they would deny telling you prices and also would say there is nothing they can do about it.

Quiet, a bit dated
The hotel is in a good location in downtown San Diego. The architecture and furniture are supposed to be late 19th or early 20th century, and that gives it some charm. The interior is dated, and the hotel does not have a bussiness center. It's also somewhat expensive for what it has to offer. I'd recommend it for a getaway, but not for a bussiness trip.

Good Location in the Gaslamp Quarter
Extremely helpful staff and excellent location. No pool, part-time restaurant and bar are all slight drawbacks. However with the many food and drink establishments in the area it's not a real problem. Walking distance to Petco is a big plus. Our room had a balcony which allowed us to watch the craziness on the street but that same craziness could cause some noisy nights if you have a lower level room on the street. Over all a fine place to stay once for a quick trip to San Diego.

I was there for a convention. The location was great, within walking distance of everything I needed and what was not within walking distance was close by via Pedicab! The hotel was very elegant and the rooms well furnished. Nice furniture. Had a great time.

nothing to write home about
The hotel is located directly in the Gaslamp District so we could walk everywhere. It was very pretty and nice memorabilia decorating the hotel. However, it was very loud. We were on the second floor and we could hear people walking and creaky floors above us, all night long. Our room needed a paint job. The pillows were uncomfortable. Front desk staff was friendly, but the valet parking guy was not. He didn't open the trunk to our vehicle or put our luggage in the vehicle upon departure, like he did for the 4 previous vehicles in front of us.
