Historic San Diego hotel gives guest a glimpse of the past

Located in San Diego's historic Gaslamp Quarter, the Horton Grand Hotel is the modern incarnation of two Victorian hotels that opened in the late 1880s. The hotel's oak grand staircase, marble lobby and antique furnishings transport guests to the 19th century. Just steps from the San Diego Convention Center, the Horton Grand Hotel today delights guests with charming ambiance, friendly service and a fantastic location near Petco Park and the bars, restaurants and shopping of the Gaslamp Quarter.

Highlights
  • Listed on the National Register of Historic Places
  • Unique Victorian-style guest rooms feature hand-carved armoires, fireplaces
  • Located in San Diego's historic Gaslamp Quarter
  • New Orleans-style open-air courtyard
Location

Just two blocks from the Horton Grand Hotel, Westfield Horton Plaza is a hub of activity. Live music and performances take place all summer, and public art adds an eclectic sensibility. More than 100 stores and services are anchored by Macy's and Nordstrom.

Rooms

Some of America's great historic figures -- Wyatt Earp, Babe Ruth and President Benjamin Harrison -- stayed at the original hotels that make up today's Horton Grand Hotel. Follow in their footsteps by staying in one of the hotel's 132 guest rooms and 24 grand rooms. City views and Victorian-inspired furnishings establish unmistakable sense of place. All rooms feature fireplaces, some have French doors that lead to private balconies overlooking the hotel courtyard. Wi-Fi Internet access is available (fees apply).

Features

After a long day of business or sightseeing, unwind with a drink at The Palace Bar at the Horton Grand Hotel. Be sure to stop by the front lobby and say hello to Sunshine, a life-size papier-mache horse from the saddle shop that previously occupied the building's ground floor.

Hit the Gaslamp Quarter, home to approximately 200 bars, restaurants and nightclubs. Just across the street from the Horton Grand Hotel, FLUXX nightclub has hosted an amazing roster of A-list celebrities. For something slightly more low-key, Cafe 222 is a great place for people watching over breakfast or lunch.

Horton Grand is as advertised

The hotel is in a great location and makes San Diego very walkable. Horton Grand is very unique and actually quite a beautiful hotel. The only negative was the greeting from the woman upon my arrival and departure- she seemed rushed and disorganized. The rest of the staff was great. I'd stay there again.

Great Victorian Hotel

Stayed downtown because we had a Holiday Party at the Rockbottom Brewery. The hotel was quaint, the service was excellence. The hotel was older but we loved the historical feeling of it. The rooms are smaller, but we didn't need a spacious room for one night. We enjoyed our stay! Ask for a quiet room facing the courtyard.

Hotel looks like ready to close

This hotel looked like it was ready to close. The staff was friendly and the location was convenient but it was overpriced for what you got. This hotel could use some updating. The ambiance was not inviting.

Some things were meant to end.

Well, [...] at the front desk was a very helpful individual and quite friendly. So, I have to give him credit. As for the hotel, it does not offer much in the way of amenities. To be honest, I really didn't find it worth the price. Extra for the balcony room? Ours looked into a giant tree. That's all we could see. We couldn't use the fan in the room b/c it made too much noise. Worst of all, the shower head didn't work properly and the water came out in spurts, if any. We told the staff and they said they'd get right on it. They NEVER came to the room. We opted to skip the shower the second night...not even worth it. Worst of all, we were charged $25/day to park our vehicle at the hotel we were paying to stay at. That's ridiculous.
