Historic San Diego hotel gives guest a glimpse of the past

Located in San Diego's historic Gaslamp Quarter, the Horton Grand Hotel is the modern incarnation of two Victorian hotels that opened in the late 1880s. The hotel's oak grand staircase, marble lobby and antique furnishings transport guests to the 19th century. Just steps from the San Diego Convention Center, the Horton Grand Hotel today delights guests with charming ambiance, friendly service and a fantastic location near Petco Park and the bars, restaurants and shopping of the Gaslamp Quarter.

Highlights
  • Listed on the National Register of Historic Places
  • Unique Victorian-style guest rooms feature hand-carved armoires, fireplaces
  • Located in San Diego's historic Gaslamp Quarter
  • New Orleans-style open-air courtyard
Location

Just two blocks from the Horton Grand Hotel, Westfield Horton Plaza is a hub of activity. Live music and performances take place all summer, and public art adds an eclectic sensibility. More than 100 stores and services are anchored by Macy's and Nordstrom.

Rooms
Some of America's great historic figures -- Wyatt Earp, Babe Ruth and President Benjamin Harrison -- stayed at the original hotels that make up today's Horton Grand Hotel. Follow in their footsteps by staying in one of the hotel's 108 guest rooms and 24 grand rooms. City views and Victorian-inspired furnishings establish unmistakable sense of place. All rooms feature gas burning fireplaces, some have French doors that lead to a balcony overlooking the hotel courtyard. Complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access is available throughout the hotel.
Features

After a long day of business or sightseeing, unwind with a drink at The Palace Bar at the Horton Grand Hotel, open Thursday to Sunday evenings with live entertainment available on Saturday nights. Be sure to stop by the front lobby and say hello to Sunshine, a life-size papier-mache horse from the saddle shop that previously occupied the building's ground floor. Guests can also buy souvenirs at the on-site gift shop, open 24/7. Limited valet parking (fees apply) and room service (limited hours) are also on offer.

Hit the Gaslamp Quarter, home to approximately 200 bars, restaurants and nightclubs. For something slightly more low-key, Cafe 222 is a great place for people watching over breakfast or lunch.

Historic Hotel with great location

Quaint hotel in the Gaslamp district. Close proximity to bars, restaurants, and attractions. We walked to a Seaport, the Midway and to dinner! Very handy. Hotel is older with small rooms but that adds to it's attractiveness. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Rooms have balcony that looks out onto an internal courtyard. Bar and breakfast areas recently remodeled and are beautiful. We would definitely stay here again. Parking is valet for $30 per day. Easy to get car any time you need it though.

Great Stay

Was in San Diego for a convention. The other hotels, even discounted, was crazy expensive. Horton was a great value and staff was very accommodating, arrived early and a room was ready. Rooms were very clean and everything worked. Location is ideal, short walk to everywhere I needed to go. High marks!!

Great Hotel

It is well worth the price, It is all antique and well decorated. The location is everything. I loved this hotel. The only problem was the bathroom was small other than that everything else was good.

Gaslamp Hotel with splendor

I love staying at this hotel whenever I am in San Diego. Great comfort, quaint styling in a 1930's theme. Pretty and quiet patio - be sure to book a room on the 3rd or 4th floor facing the patio! Close walk to Little Italy, rest of the Gaslamp District.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

There is a great, though expensive, hole-in-the-wall diner about 300 ft further down "I" Street. Best breakfast in town!!

Fantastic nearby conference hotel

I had a huge conference at a nearby hotel and for half the price I stayed at the Horton Grand Hotel in the Gaslamp District. This gave me a pleasant walk to and from the conference with plenty of choice for meals. The hotel was clean, unique, friendly and the rooms and the whole hotel had decor and furniture of the time period, yet very comfortable. The window displays along the elevator ride next the courtyard are a must, even if you are staying on the ground floor. Thanks.

Worth it

Beautiful hotel, great location, but rooms are small? Bathrooms are great if you lived in 1940. Loud club across the street so choose room accordingly.. Great bar downstairs.. I would stay here again.

Great Find

This hotel was a pleasant surprise. I like to stay at non-chain hotels, and sometimes find these to be very unkept and disappointing. This hotel, however, exceeded my expectations. Everything about it was so quaint. My room had a fireplace, balcony and king bed. The shower head wasn't working so I did have to take a bath which prevented me from giving this a perfect score. Other than that, everything was great!
