Historic San Diego hotel gives guest a glimpse of the past

Located in San Diego's historic Gaslamp Quarter, the Horton Grand Hotel is the modern incarnation of two Victorian hotels that opened in the late 1880s. The hotel's oak grand staircase, marble lobby and antique furnishings transport guests to the 19th century. Just steps from the San Diego Convention Center, the Horton Grand Hotel today delights guests with charming ambiance, friendly service and a fantastic location near Petco Park and the bars, restaurants and shopping of the Gaslamp Quarter.

Highlights
  • Listed on the National Register of Historic Places
  • Unique Victorian-style guest rooms feature hand-carved armoires, fireplaces
  • Located in San Diego's historic Gaslamp Quarter
  • New Orleans-style open-air courtyard
Location

Just two blocks from the Horton Grand Hotel, Westfield Horton Plaza is a hub of activity. Live music and performances take place all summer, and public art adds an eclectic sensibility. More than 100 stores and services are anchored by Macy's and Nordstrom.

Rooms
Some of America's great historic figures -- Wyatt Earp, Babe Ruth and President Benjamin Harrison -- stayed at the original hotels that make up today's Horton Grand Hotel. Follow in their footsteps by staying in one of the hotel's 108 guest rooms and 24 grand rooms. City views and Victorian-inspired furnishings establish unmistakable sense of place. All rooms feature gas burning fireplaces, some have French doors that lead to a balcony overlooking the hotel courtyard. Complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access is available throughout the hotel.
Features

After a long day of business or sightseeing, unwind with a drink at The Palace Bar at the Horton Grand Hotel, open Thursday to Sunday evenings with live entertainment available on Saturday nights. Be sure to stop by the front lobby and say hello to Sunshine, a life-size papier-mache horse from the saddle shop that previously occupied the building's ground floor. Guests can also buy souvenirs at the on-site gift shop, open 24/7. Limited valet parking (fees apply) and room service (limited hours) are also on offer.

Hit the Gaslamp Quarter, home to approximately 200 bars, restaurants and nightclubs. For something slightly more low-key, Cafe 222 is a great place for people watching over breakfast or lunch.

Nightlife tip: Short walk from hotel

This is a perfect hotel for those who don't want to spend loads of money but want a clean and safe place to stay. Great for crashing after a night of partying to avoid driving intoxicated.

Great deal

Booked this hotel last minute. They had a special for Labor Day weekend and I paid atleast half of what I would have paid for anything else. The hotel itself was very cute. Victorian style, old furniture, old school vibe but very nice. Staff was very helpful and friendly. It's located right of the party strip in SD so very loud on the weekends. Looks like and older crowed kind of place but really suits the younger one. If you want something modern and chique this isn't the place for you. Over all I had a very good experience. I would recommend it for people that are trying to go out a lot and be around the younger going travelers. It looks like it would be good for families but in weekends the noise level will tell you otherwise.

Great deal in the center of gaslamp

This hotel is right next to many of the major downtown San Diego attractions like Gaslamp Quarter and Petco Park. Plenty of restaurants and bars within walking distance. The room was somewhat small but the fire place and table made it seem quaint and comfortable. The only downside we experienced was the construction going on inside and the fact that you had to pay extra for vale parking. It was $30 And was not included as part of your original room fee. (Luckily the vale driver told us beforehand because the conceirge did not). We were able to find cheaper parking elsewhere a block down but that was a little inconveniant. Overall great for couples who don't mind being surrounded by the city and all its livelyhood!

Haunted? I think not.

We were in town for a quick overnight stay and decided to take advantage to stay in the Gaslamp district. The Horton Grand is perfectly located near some great restaurants and night life. The ghost stories were fun to read and check out. Kept us on our toes as we walked around and checked out the hotel. Of course, the 2nd floor elevator display of antiques was a little creepy. And the noise level on a Saturday night was to be expected in downtown. But overall, I would highly recommend this hotel.
