Located in San Diego's historic Gaslamp Quarter, the Horton Grand Hotel is the modern incarnation of two Victorian hotels that opened in the late 1880s. The hotel's oak grand staircase, marble lobby and antique furnishings transport guests to the 19th century. Just steps from the San Diego Convention Center, the Horton Grand Hotel today delights guests with charming ambiance, friendly service and a fantastic location near Petco Park and the bars, restaurants and shopping of the Gaslamp Quarter.

Location

Just two blocks from the Horton Grand Hotel, Westfield Horton Plaza is a hub of activity. Live music and performances take place all summer, and public art adds an eclectic sensibility. More than 100 stores and services are anchored by Macy's and Nordstrom.

Rooms
Some of America's great historic figures -- Wyatt Earp, Babe Ruth and President Benjamin Harrison -- stayed at the original hotels that make up today's Horton Grand Hotel. Follow in their footsteps by staying in one of the hotel's 108 guest rooms and 24 grand rooms. City views and Victorian-inspired furnishings establish unmistakable sense of place. All rooms feature gas burning fireplaces, some have French doors that lead to a balcony overlooking the hotel courtyard. Complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access is available throughout the hotel.
Property features

Holidaymakers at Horton Grand Hotel savour delectable culinary specialties for lunch and dinner at Ida Bailey's Restaurant, open from 6 AM to 2 PM. After a long day of business or sightseeing, unwind and sample appetizers at The Palace Bar, open every night, from 5 PM until midnight. The Palace Bar also offers live entertainment on Friday and Saturday evenings. Be sure to stop by the front lobby and say hello to Sunshine, a life-size papier-mache horse from the saddle shop that previously occupied the building's ground floor. Guests can also buy souvenirs at the on-site gift shop, open 24/7. Valet parking (fees apply) is also available for added convenience.

Hit the Gaslamp Quarter, home to approximately 200 bars, restaurants and nightclubs. For something slightly more low-key, Cafe 222 is a great place for people watching over breakfast or lunch.

Very enjoyable stay

My stay at the Horton Grand Hotel was lovely. I was in San Diego for a meeting, and the hotel was within convenient walking distance to the Convention Center. It is situated in the Gaslamp Quarter, so right near many many good restaurants, yet off the main drag so it was very quiet. Mass transit is easily accessible as well, making it easy to explore San Diego. The room was small but comfortable -- very suitable for 1 person. I did not eat at the restaurant or visit the lounge, so cannot speak to them. I rated the WiFi service just ok, as I didn't use this, either. All in all, I would definitely stay at the Horton Grand Hotel again -- gladly!

Hotel was beautiful, rooms clean and fresh other than a little dusty!! Loved the area, the courtyard was fabulous and everyone on the personnel were great and very helpful!!! Breakfast at the resturant and drinks were delicious, the waitress was so accommodating, the kitchen even made me fresh whipped cream for my latte, they went above and beyond!! Would stay again in June but the prices are double and just to expensive for one night!! Overall EXCELLENT

Nice hotel with some minor problems

The hotel looks amazing. Very classy, French retro. Check in was painless. Parking (valet only) was supposed to be thirty per day, but they never charged us (comped?). The room was clean, the beds were comfortable, and the balcony was nice. The gas fireplace is a nice touch and timer-operated. The hotel was right in the middle of the Gaslamp Quarter. Walking distance to dozens of restaurants and bars, malls, and shops. This also means that you'll definitely hear some raucous drinkers as they fill up the streets after last call. Can't really fault the hotel for that, though, because it's otherwise in a terrific location. The toiletries and room amenities were pretty much standard. Bible, towels, shampoo, soap, blow dryer, 2 water bottles, and a coffee machine with 4 packages of coffee + sugar & creamer. There was no mini-bar, but we wouldn't have used it anyway. Staff was helpful and quick to respond, but sparse. We saw, maybe, 5 hotel employees the 2 days we were there. The hotel was undergoing remodeling when we were there, but the construction wasn't loud or intrusive. The biggest problem with the construction was that there was only one ice machine on our floor, which was located in the middle of the construction area. There was no room safe. The free coffee (supposedly a medium roast) was TERRIBLE, incredibly weak and watery. It was the same color as chicken broth. The wardrobe was standard size, but only had 2 or 3 hangers, so definitely not enough for 4+ coats, shirts, pants, etc... The WiFi was also really slow. We hooked up a MacBook to the HDTV and tried to stream a movie on Netflix, but the WiFi couldn't handle it. It could barely load a webpage in under 20 seconds, let alone stream a movie. We ended up using my phone as a hotspot. We booked a double Queen room for great price right around New Years. I would definitely recommend the Grand Horton if you can get a good deal, but at regular price, I would consider another place, one with better WiFi, free parking, and complementary coffee or breakfast, even if it means settling for a more conventional aesthetic.

Better than a 3* Hotel

The Horton is beautiful it has charm that is out of this world! I was behind some very needy and demanding people at check-in, but the staff handled them wonderfully. The location is also perfect for walking within the gaslamp quarter and the room was perfectly clean and spacious- got a fireplace and balcony unexpectedly, so thank you! Would highly recommend this hotel- especially for value!

It was strange hotel, no bad, location was OK, near where I wanted to be. It had this wild west theme that seemed left over from the 80's.
