Historic San Diego hotel gives guest a glimpse of the past
Located in San Diego's historic Gaslamp Quarter, the Horton Grand Hotel is the modern incarnation of two Victorian hotels that opened in the late 1880s. The hotel's oak grand staircase, marble lobby and antique furnishings transport guests to the 19th century. Just steps from the San Diego Convention Center, the Horton Grand Hotel today delights guests with charming ambiance, friendly service and a fantastic location near Petco Park and the bars, restaurants and shopping of the Gaslamp Quarter.
Highlights
- Listed on the National Register of Historic Places
- Unique Victorian-style guest rooms feature hand-carved armoires, fireplaces
- Located in San Diego's historic Gaslamp Quarter
- New Orleans-style open-air courtyard
Location
Just two blocks from the Horton Grand Hotel, Westfield Horton Plaza is a hub of activity. Live music and performances take place all summer, and public art adds an eclectic sensibility. More than 100 stores and services are anchored by Macy's and Nordstrom.
Rooms
Some of America's great historic figures -- Wyatt Earp, Babe Ruth and President Benjamin Harrison -- stayed at the original hotels that make up today's Horton Grand Hotel. Follow in their footsteps by staying in one of the hotel's 132 guest rooms and 24 grand rooms. City views and Victorian-inspired furnishings establish unmistakable sense of place. All rooms feature fireplaces, some have French doors that lead to private balconies overlooking the hotel courtyard. Wi-Fi Internet access is available (fees apply).
Features
After a long day of business or sightseeing, unwind with a drink at The Palace Bar at the Horton Grand Hotel. Be sure to stop by the front lobby and say hello to Sunshine, a life-size papier-mache horse from the saddle shop that previously occupied the building's ground floor.
Hit the Gaslamp Quarter, home to approximately 200 bars, restaurants and nightclubs. Just across the street from the Horton Grand Hotel, FLUXX nightclub has hosted an amazing roster of A-list celebrities. For something slightly more low-key, Cafe 222 is a great place for people watching over breakfast or lunch.

Birthday Weekend
We reserved a room with a fireplace, and when we got in, it wouldn't light. Staff came up and tried to fix it, and when they were not able to, they promptly moved us to another room with the exact same amenities. It's a historical hotel, not modern at all (pull chain toilets). I chose it for that reason. Very cute place!

very good if you are traveling alone for conference
Great location - 3-5 minutes walk from the san diego convention center. The room has one queen bed - very good if you are traveling alone to conferences. Also, there are plenty of restaurants and bars around, very safe area to walk around at night. A starbucks around the corner. Wireless internet is not free - 9.95 $ per 24 hours for wireless internet. The room is pretty -Victorian style old furniture etc.

Short walk from hotel
The Royal Thai restaurant on 5th avenue is great - and only 1 minute or so walk from the hotel. There is also a restaurant inside the hotel, which opens only for breakfast and lunch. It's in downtown, so many bars etc. around the hotel.

Patiently Waiting
Can't beat the location
After spending 30 min in line trying to check in, even though there was only 3 couples checking in ahead of me, I had to wait another 10 min for the valet to take my car. The staff is extremely slow, and the man at the front desk didn't mind taking his time to answer phone calls, and other guests questions while putting the check in process on hold. The location is amazing, a block away from everything. Even though the whole place is outdated, it has it's charm.

Great location, wonderful staff!
Horton Grand Hotel is located within a 5 minute walk of the San Diego convention Center. I enjoyed the location and service. However, amenities leave much to be desired. No internet was available.

Good value
My only complaint was no coffee in the rooms! Otherwise the price was great, the accomodations were nice and it was within walking distance of lots of shops and restaurants. It was a good value for the money.

Short drive from hotel
Don't prepay for the shuttle on line. This area is close to the airport and it would have actually been cheaper to pay for the shuttle when I arrived!

Romantic Victorian Escape
I loved the room and hotel. It would probably attract more people if it had a fitness room and a more lively bar. The bar needs Music! It was empty the 2 nights we were there (Friday & Saturday).

great
I love this hotel. Every time I used stairs, I feel like I am in 19th century. Each floor is a piece of art and mystery. And you should definitively use each elevator. There is a small surprise in one of them. There is only one bad part of staying in this hotel: The Internet is not included. I purchased it for 4 day by paying $30 and half of the time I could not use it. The connection was horrible. I waited one night half an hour to send 1 picture, then I give up and send it in the morning in 1 minutr.

We really enjoyed this hotel. We have stayed in the past and like the architecture and historic relevence. The fireplace adds a nice ambiance however it was too hot to use this trip. I will stay at this hotel again in the future.

Short walk from hotel
Refrain from using pedicabs if possible. They are not as safe and regular cabs and are more expensive. We were quaoted 20 dollars to take us 4 blocks. We ended up spending just 5 dollars in a regular cab.
