Great in many ways, but a few problems
The good news: Funky hotel, cool atmosphere, attractive people all around Fantastic location for getting to the convention center and the many dining/drinking options in Gaslamp. Good for lounging in the pool and hot tub. And I really enjoyed practicing guitar on the free Fender rental. The bad news: Inner workings of air vent in bathroom visibly coated in dusty mold and air coming from the vent smells strongly of mold- so not a pleasant place to be. Also, the hallway smelled something like spermicidal lubricant- and whatever the source of the smell may have been, it was a bit noxious and persisted for the entire week I was there. Hallway smells are not as bid of a deal as moldy bathroom smells, but thought it worth mentioning. One real gripe for me is the spotty wireless service. Although paying daily for this service, connection was tenuous and inconsistent, and very very slow even when connected. There seems to have been a tech group holding meetings at the hotel that week, and their posters said something about hackers, so maybe they were running meetings with several computers using up a lot of bandwidth, but the bottom line was I couldn't count on the wifi and it was annoying. Lastly, and this is totally a matter of taste, but the hotel is intended to celebrate hard rock music, as in rock and roll with a bit of bite. That said, cheesy club-style house music was playing constantly around the poolside lounge- where people congregate for some sunny relaxation, swimming, and drinks. Just a minor disappointment for this hard rock fan. Conclusion: Not sure I would stay there again, or at least I would be a little more vocal about choosing a less smelly room on a less smelly floor. Also, the wifi seriously needs updating to be brought up to a level of quality that mostly everything else in the hotel is so carefully designed to achieve.

Nightlife tip:
Short walk from hotel
The bars and restaurants in the Gaslamp area of San Diego, which surrounds this hotel, are wild on Friday and Saturday nights. Its fun if you're into that sort of thing. So reservations for large dinner groups can be useful, and expect some rowdy revelers packing the streets from about 11pm to 1am.

Great Gaslamp Getaway
We loved staying at the Hard Rock in San Diego Gaslamp District! Hotel was steps away from many restaurants, bars, and shops. Rooms were modern, clean, and comforatable. We got a quiet room on the 12th floor overlooking the stadium. Pool was cute and the lounges were a lot of fun! Will definitely stay here again next time.

great location
Rooms and pool with bar are great. The passings trains are very loud, need sleeping with earplugs. Do they need to blow there horn every time they're passing? In the hotel there is only a sushi and burger restaurant, but in the area plenty of options.
