excellent location

It feels uncomfortable to drive in an unknown city but The Handlery Hotel was very easy to find, it is close to major highways and therefore covenient to access different parts of the city. It is close to downtown, to the gaslamp district and is just blocks away from a beautiful outdoors mall. The hotel charges $12.oo dlls daily to park your car, it is a fee that I was not expecting. There is no elevator to the second floor but the manager was quick to accomodate us in a room on the first floor (my mom doesn't do stairs well).Comfortable bedding in general but mainly the pillows. The restaurant food was delicious, and excellent service.

Decent place, decent value

Overall the Handlery was a nice place. The rooms were comfortable and in good repair. I did have to call to have someone adjust the thermostat, it only seemed to blow cold air regardless of the temperature setting. Someone else in my group had the same problem in their room. It was nice to have onsite parking, but annoying that you have to pay an additional $12/day. We had a couple of meals at the restaurant that were very good if not a little expensive, but what isn't in California. We were attending a convention at eh neighborring convention center which was great because it is 5 minute walk along the golf course. The fashion mall was within walking distance as well. Access to and from the major attractions, airport and beahces was very good.

great location

The Handlery was located in prime view of the hills and was very aspiring. Built in the late fifties, the upkeep has been great and the floor plans were very accomodating. All that needs changing are the matteresses which seem a bit out dated.

Convience yes...value no!

The Handerly was good for a last minute hotel decision, however, with research a better deal can be found in San Diego. We were pleased with the cleanliness and customer service of the hotel. They offered free shuttles to the major San Diego destinations and the American Postcards restuarant fare was excellent (however overpriced). I believe that the hotel is slightly overpriced for its quality and foremost if the hotel is going to charge such rates parking should be free.

Sightseeing tip: Short drive from hotel

Hotel is in a busy interstate area, so be prepared to either arrange hotel transportation or drive yourself. It is not an easy area just to walk around from location to location, such as to restuarants and the nearby mall because one would have to cross a major highway without any sidewalks.

Great place to stay

Wonderful staff at all levels. Dining at the bistro was excellent. We had 2 breakfasts, 1 lunch and 2 dinners at the bistro and all 4 of us felt the food was excellent. Pool was great, spa worked great also. Room was OK. Location to San Diego attractions was easy to get to. We highly recommend this hotel.

The building we were in was being remodeled

The hotel was pretty clean, but was being remoled. I would not consider it a resort even though It says it is. I also thought there was going to be a microwave in the room and there was not ! You also had to pay to park in the hotel parking lot a fee of 12 dolarrs a day . Overall it was a okay hotel .

'Hot and Steamy' trip to San Diego

It was titled a 'Hotel and Resort' and except for plumbing and A/C problems it was nice enough. When we checked in and got to the room it was warm and musty and the bathroom sink was backed up. Maintenance responded quickly and snaked out the sink but had to come back later when it backed up again. The room wouldn't cool down but maintenance said the A/C was working though the air was never cold blowing out of the ceiling and it constantly ran - thankfully it cooled down outside in the evenings and we could open the windows for a while to cool the room before going to bed.
