The hotel is a bit out of the way if you do not have a car; and if you do have a car it's quite expensive to park. The meals ... are expensive, and there is no transportation to any of the local amusement parks. The staff was friendly and the resort was absolutely beautiful. We were upgraded[...]and our suite was nice, although the kitchen area was a little out dated.

Beautiful view of the bay, had a studio w/kitchen. If you get one of these please bring your own salt and pepper/ condiments ... as there are none in the room. Also, the sliding screen door to the balcony was off the track and the glass door didn't lock very well. It would really be helpful to out of towners if there were a map of the local area of interests since the garmin doesn't work in the parking garage and some places we could have walked to instead of driving around.

The highlight of the trip for my kids (12 and 13 years old) was kayaking in the caves in La Jolla and swimming with the sharks - all part of the same guided tour. I enjoyed the Old Town Trolley tour - it's a hop-on/hop-off tour that gives a great overview of the city and its attractions. Great Mexican food and margarita's in old town too!

Pretty view, ridiculous charges
Tanya Nov 30, 2009
The hotel was gorgeous, inside and out. The room was a little small but we did not plan on being in there much so that was no ... big concern. Toilet/shower were iffy. But the biggest problem was the charges for everything. Complimentary toothpaste? not here. Local phone calls? 75 cents! And parking... Hope you planned on extra expenses because its $13 a night to self park or $17 a night for valet. And it is also open to public so if you are there in the summertime, I can't imagine finding a parking spot.

Catamaran Reort in Mission Beach
California Dreamin' Nov 29, 2009
Super location - right on the bay and a block from the ocean. There is a great paved path along the bay (and a paved ... boardwalk along the ocean as well) that hosts joggers, walkers, skaters, etc. There is plenty of shopping and great restaurants within walking distance. Mission beach is a short drive to all local attractions so we really couldn't complain at all about the location. We went off season (first week in November) so traffic wasn't an issue but in the busy season, the bus that stops right outside the hotel would be a viable alternative to driving. The hotel grounds were pretty with a stream that was home to ducks, a swan, and a lot of koi. Our patio backed right up to the stream so the kids enjoyed morning visits from a couple of the resident ducks. Also entertaining were the talking parrots they keep on the grounds. The service, the ambiance and the food at the restaurant were all excellent. Like most hotel restaurants, a bit pricey for a family to make a habit of though. The rooms were kept clean but were somewhat dated...pretty much my only negative comment. The pool area was nice and we met some great people just hanging out in the large whirlpool. Off the pool area is a pretty well-stocked game room for the kids.Overall, it was a pleasant experience [...]

Traveling for my gymnast Nov 17, 2009
Overall the visit was great. The service was friendly and the check in process was effortless. The location was amazing, ... centered right between the bay and the beach. The room was very quiet and the beds were extremely comfortable. The only negative aspects of the visit was that parking was $13 in spite of there being plenty of spaces available in the parking structure. Also, we had a suite with a kitchen. The suite was very nice but the kitchen was a little dated and it was not very well stocked. I highly recommend bringing some paper towels or napkins, since there were none in the room, as well as a non-stick pan if you are used to cooking with them. I had difficulty using the pans that were provided. But it did offer me the opportunity to cook some meals which was great.

location was excellent for walking to the beach and the bay. many small restaurants very close in walking distance. the free ... boat ride around the bay was fun. the staff was very courteous and the concierge had very good suggestions for dining, coffee houses and places to visit in the area. the on site dining was disappointing in that there was only the one main restaurant which didn't have much for small meals for a quick bite to eat. can't beatthe location for access to many things to do and the view from the tower's room was great.

CaTake a short walk to a restaurant on Pacific Beach called World Famous. The food is wonderful. Make reservations on a weekend, as it can be a long wait. Great seafood. Went kayaking at the caves in La Jolla caves, fun. About $80 for a double. Saw a lot of seals on nearby beach. Torrey Pines State Park is beautiful also, with scenery as good as Hawaii. Lots of fun trails there.

We have been guests at the Catamaran several times over the years. We love the hotel location and the amenities of the ... property. We took several tours of SD sites, which the hotel assisted in arranging. We had a great time! One small disappointment: the Catamaran website indicated that the stay would include a complimentary breakfast each day. None of the staff seemed to know anything about this nor did they offer to look into the matter. We will definitely continue to consider the Catamaran for our future San Diego visits.
