Very small, dark room

The Best Western Island Palms was in a nice location, next to a marina, but there were no ammenities within walking distance. Our room was very small and had very little light. The windows were small, with heavy shutters, and the outdoor light was blocked by another structure.

The good, the bad, and the really, ugly!

Got severe reaction to either laundry detergent or fabric softener used on sheets, bed spread. Caused severe rash, itching and had to get prescription for Prednisone to help. I was uncomfortable and generally miserable for more than 3 days.

Not Good

I am glad you sent me this I was planning on contacting you anyway. First off the room that we were put in was not in any of the pictures on the website. Because if it was I would have never picked this dump. The toilet flushing was so loud we didn't want to use the toilet if someone was sleeping because it would wake them up. So we held our urine alot on this trip. Plus when you shut the bathroom door everyone could still hear your business. We could here people talking while they were walking by all night long even with windows and the door shut. Then the second night there we had a three inch cockroach on our bed. So they moved us to a new room for the last two nights and one day. Even though the room was nicer and it was the one I expected in the first place. I still couldn't sleep after seeing that cockroach. Between the noise the roach and unclean enviornment. We had a very sleepless vacation. I am thinking of talking to the better business bureau. I would like refund from this trip. It was not what I would call a vacation.

Good location; moderate price; dark room

The Shelter Island location is the best part of this facility. It has good access to downtown San Diego, as well as the beaches. The hotel is older, but has had some refurbishing. However, we were assigned the Harry Potter room, as I dubbed it, since it was under the stairs. It was quite small and dark. Oddly, the bathroom was almost as large as the rest of the room, and had a cool skylight, so that it ended up being the best light in the room.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

You can walk to restaurants on Shelter Island and get great views of the harbor and marina. Or, just a short drive away is the Point Loma area with lots of small eating places.

Make reservations carefully

Make your reservations carefully at this hotel. Request or make reservations for the Casa Del Mar Building and not the Island Palms older side of this hotel. 1st night in older side we had BAD mattress. 2nd night we had a roach in one room and transferred to a room in the Casa Del Mar Building what a difference! Through all this the staff was polite and eager to please. Great location and view. Hotel Resturant was so so for food and service not great for lunch.

will not stay there again

This hotel left ALOT to be desired. The location was across the harbor and a good 15min drive from the supposed "right near" distance to downtown. It was not possible to get to the gaslamp without a car. When i checked in my reservation (which I had done online) was not in the system even 7hours later. So they had me sit in the lobby for over 30min just to get my information. The hotel never addressed this inconvenience or said anything to me. The rooms are small and the bathroom is far from luxurious. The lights take about 5min to warm up so the lights are dim when you first turn them on. The stand up shower has no light at all so you shower in the dark. The drain of the shower also came loose while I was showering so I had to replace the grimy drain myself. I will not be staying there again.

Needs QUIET!

Enjoyed the bar and marina views. Unfortunately, this was the noisiest hotel we've stayed in, with men in the hallways between 12:30 and 1:30 a.m. yelling and laughing and slamming doors.

Pretty Shabby

We were disappointed from start to finish! We had obviously booked on orbit, but when we checked in they had no record of us at all! Good thing that my husband printed the conformation. We then waited for 20 minutes until they decided it was valid. With zero apologies for the delay we were given a key. Fantastic the hotel had a broken elevator and we were on the second floor! We have a one year old so that leads to lots and lots of stuff! When we arrived at our room we found dirty towels in the bathroom, soiled mayo in the fridge, trash in the cans, and a pillow on the floor. We had also requested a crib at check in, but had to call back 20 minutes after we got to our room and ask again. The next day housekeeping managed to remove our bath mat and never replaced it. We also found receipts under the bed from close to two weeks ago. When you have a one year old you look under the bed, obviously housekeeping doesn’t. We brought our concerns to the hotels attention upon checkout and they said they would let housekeeping know. This hotel could be fantastic! It is in a wonderful location and close to all kinds of fabulous attractions! The theme is cool and the restaurant is decent.
