Our Winter Break

I'm in my 60's but have a 13 year old that likes to spend her winter break with dad. We went to Florida Keys last year, and San Diego this year. The hotel was wonderful. We arrived about noon, and waited only an hour for our comfortable double queen bed room. The view was the marina. Two pools and hot tubs a short walk. It took 15 minutes to drive from the airport to Shelter Island. It is quite close to good restaurants in Point Loma (Fiddler's Green, Brigantine, Il Pomodoro), and a short drive to La Jolla Cove, and area attractions. My only complaint would be slow service in the restaurant at breakfast.

Time-saving tip: Short drive from hotel

Nimitz Blvd is he best route to the 5 Freeway North; Rosencrans has too many lights and traffic. This is for travel to La Jolla, Sea World. Going South, Harbor blvs past the airport.

an excellent hotel - very helpful and friendly staff

We wanted a few days away from the city and the hotel was perfect. A good location. Excellent and very helpful staff. Very friendly staff. Really good food. Its a pity its a bit far from public transport - but the walk did us good! We would recommend it.

We didn't find it that good

We had some days off so we booked a four day stay here, partly due to location, free parking and internet. Location is really good. We went for walks everyday along the waters edge or along the marina at the rear of the hotel. There are good restuarants within an easy walk, less than a mile. To drive to Downtown or Balboa Park was fast and simple. We got a decent rate from this web site but when we arrived at the hotel the front desk mentioned that since we did we would be staying at the lowest value room. Yep, it sure was. The room was dark, dreary and small. It wasn't much bigger than a small cruise ship cabin. It was nicely remodeled with new furniture and the bathroom was nicely done too. Some reviewers mentioned that the shower was dark with no light in it. That is right but there is a light just outside the shower door that illuminated the shower fine. The room also had a small microwave and compact refrigerator. The bed was the most uncomfortable one that we have used in many years. The box mattress was so noisy that my wife went out and bought ear plugs so that when we shifted during the night the noise wouldn't wake her. We complained to the front desk, thinking that the bed frame was broken but nothing was done. We could also hear the guests in the next two rooms when using the toilet, flushing, showering, etc. Not a very pleasant beginning. The room was very, very clean as the housekeeping staff were very friendly and nice. There is an old section and a new section to the hotel. We stayed in the old section. There are some rooms that do not face the water and are per say, land locked with no views what so ever. The worst rooms that I noticed were numbered 134-137. Why, because they were right across from the loading dock of the hotel and restuarant and along the pathway access for the marina in back of the hotel. Which meant that people were walking by talking at all hours and the delivery trucks made some noise when backing too. I feel that we were lucky that we weren't asigned one of these rooms. The restuarant on premises, Blue Wave, was very decently priced for breakfast, either $6.95 or $10.95, depending on just how much you wanted for breakfast. The food was good and the service decent. The pool and the pool area is very, very small. Overall it is a nice place to stay depending on the room one gets, but we won't ever return there.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Brigantine restuarant was only .8 of a mile away. If you ask at the front desk they have a coupon for a free appetizer. The entrees are in the 15 to 30 dollar range. Point Lomas seafood is a fast food, local favorite. They only take cash but the service is fast and the food really, really good. It is just over a mile away. The new building should be ready very soon.

Fabulous birthday stay

From the time we arrived we knew we had a great pick. We got in very early but the front staff was very helpful in trying to get us in a room early and we were told that we were upgraded to a junior suite, which was the perfert start to my surprise weekend with my husband for his 50th birthday! The view of the marina from the pool is awesome. The room was so clean and huge! The staff was great, very nice and friendly at ever turn. Our front staff was great about getting us directions to everywhere we needed to go. Very nice bar and restuarnt also. Nice location, even saw a seal jumping in the water in front of the hotel! We will definetly come back and stay! Thank you so much for a wonderful time!

Nice surprise!

We had never stayed on Shelter Island before and this hotel was great! The location was perfect for walking along the Bay with a beautiful view. There was a nice restaurant, ample, safe parking, a pool and hot tub, and a very friendly staff. The rooms and outdoor areas were clean and pretty. Next time we visit San Diego, this is the place we want to stay. In one direction you view the Bay with the San Diego skyline in the background, and the other direction offers a lovely view of the yacht harbor. We saw dolphins from the park across the street, and whales from the ocean side of the island. Just fabulous!!

Terrific hotel!

The Best Western Island Palms is a beautiful hotel that is centrally located--minutes away from downtown, the Gaslamp District, La Jolla and many other destinations. The rooms were very clean and the view from the 3rd floor marina rooms was fantastic! Danny at the front desk was so helpful and upgraded our room. Everyone we dealt with from the hotel was fantastic and the food at the restaurant was very good. We will stay here every time we go to San Diego!!!
