You Get What You Pay For

I paid $35.92 for a small single room, no TV, shared bathroom down the hall. I don't think you'll find anything cheaper in downtown San Diego. My room was on the 2nd floor. I stated for one night in July. It was hot. There isn't any air-conditioning, but the ceiling fan was adequate. The carpets in the hallway and room look a little grungy. The walls look a little over due for a paint job. The elevators were out-of-order. A couple of the showers in the shared 2nd floor bathrooms were broken. For thirty-six bucks, it was pretty much what I expected. 500 West Hotel is located within one block of a stop for the number 992 bus that made it extremely convenient to get there from the airport. It is also within a block of the American Plaza Trolley Station and Amtrak Santa Fe Depot. All the nearby connections to public transportation made the location ideal for my needs for a one night stay. I wouldn't want to stay there for more than a single night, but for what I paid, I was satisfied.

Slightly better than sleeping on the street

Four of five shared bathrooms were clogged, but eventually cleared, but not cleaned. Stains on carpet and walls, grime covering everything. This is not a vacation or business hotel, but a hotel of last resort.

Carpets need to be changed

The hotel was not bad for the money. Even the common bathroom was ok. The carpets in the place need to be changed in the halls and rooms. Then I would raise the rating. Staff was very nice.

Cheap Place to Crash

The location of this hostel (yes, it IS a hostel) can't be beat for the price. Hotels in a similar location go for 2-4 times as much!! We stayed here for a single night and treated it more as a place to sleep. The room was tiny, but private. The hotel staff and security guard were very nice and helpful. The bathrooms were pretty gross...but as long as you brig shower shoes, it's not a big deal. Reminded us a lot of a college dorm. If you are looking for a place to just crash, want to be in the heart of downtown, and don't need the extra amenities that a Hyatt or Mariott has to offer, I would definitely suggest this little hotel/hostel! NOTE: One complaint we had was parking cost us $25 for one night In public garage next door. Be sure to factor this into your cost when booking this hotel, since there is no free Parking at the hostel.

Business Trip

I'm active duty Navy.. Had to stay at an hotel waiting on my ship to return.. The staff was very helpful and the rooms were clean.. It was my first time staying at a European style hotel..They reminded me of an upgraded Hostel.. My overall experience was pretty good.. I would go back if I needed a quick check in hotel.

awesome place to stay

My boyfriend and I were staying here in between apartments and for what it is we love it. It's clean and comfortable, very private even though you have to walk down the hall to the restroom. The location is prime as are the views from the front of the building. We would definitely stay here again.

Convenient for single person

My stay was very accessible to the downtown San Diego scenery. The amenities needed to updated. And carpet in rooms need to be thoroughly cleaned. Maintenance & housekeeping are cool.

Great Location

For a two star hotel, I have to say, it was a little below what I expected. I loved the location however, and every morning I had coffee outside at a local vendor stand. That was great. Look, frankly, you can't expect much for a two star hotel in downtown San Diego. that being said, I would stay there again. If you are looking for anything more that a place to lay your head and put down your stuff... this is probably not your place.
