Feel the history in the heart of the Gas Lamp

Being a fan of history, I loved this hotel! You feel like you actually live in the museum. The location is perfect..steps away from all the touristic attractions in the Gas Lamp area. Right across the street from the famous Fluxx nightclub, although it doesn't really bother your sleep. It's really nice inside with a cute garden you can hang out 24 hours a day. The staff is friendly and helpful... Really good value for your money! =)

no frills hotel. Rooms are old and not very clean. Bathrooms are not attached and in outside corridor, however access is not a problem. Good location next to train station and major places of interest.

Good value and great location

The two main attractions of this hotel are the location and the price. If you're looking for a clean, safe place to sleep near downtown without spending a lot of money this is your place. If you're looking for a fancy bedroom or you want to spend time in the hotel, this is not your place. I basically went there to sleep, so I didn't care that the building isn't the newest one around, or that the bathroom is shared.

Location, Location, Location

The Good: - Great Location Downtown. Walk to Seaport Village, Trolley, Horton Plaza, Gaslamp - Cool old converted YMCA building with a nice lobby - Manager resolved a mistaken charge to my account to my satisfaction next day. Not So Good: - BIG mix up with authorization hold at check in with a reservation that was already paid in full. Make sure they do not attempt to hold more than $50 above a prepaid stay or you will have a major headache trying to get it back!! BOTTOM LINE - Furnishings are sparse, tv is tiny but channel selection is good. Yes, you share bathrooms but they are all individual and were clean on this visit. Do NOT visit if temperature is above 80! You will get serious heat exhaustion as there is no AC. All in all, if you are not terribly picky and want to have an adventure in Downtown San Diego in the fall or spring, the value is good for what you get.

Great Hotel (Hostel)

Having completed a three day company paid stay at the Manchester Hyatt, the cost of additional time was on me. I decided against the $270 per night cost of the Hyatt and preferred the $70 cost of 500 West Hotel. Since I had stayed there in the past, I knew what I was getting for the money. The fact that private bathroom was across the hall, and there are windows instead of air conditioning may keep some from visiting. However the room was very clean and met my purpose well. I like old hotels like this as long as they are very clean. There is also a good restaurant named "Grand Central" attached. Breakfast was $9.00 which is a deal in San Diego. This place is probably not for everyone, but it suited my needs well.

It's a Y

Location great, parking $20.00. Room barely adequate. I would recommend if you are arriving by public transit and if you do not mind sharing bathroom.

Ok last minute option

People were slamming doors all night because the way the door closes. It was very disruptive to sleep. There was also a disgruntled customer at check in who was not receiving good customer service when we were there even though our person was good. It gave me pause about how I would be treated if I had issues.

Cheaper is not always better

I desperately needed a room for Saturday night of Labor Day weekend as I was moving my daughter into college. This is the only "reasonably" priced location I could find nearby. I understand better now why some people say that cheaper is not always better. Sirens going off much of the night, loud neighbors in the hallway, broken sink in bathroom . . . forgot my flipflops for the shower in the common bathroom, so I literally poured some bleach on the floor to not contract anything. I can handle basic . . . this was a bit too much, and I would not recommend or stay there again.

It's what you pay for

Probably the most cheap hotel in that area. It's exactly what they say. Good enough to spend few nights, but nothing like Marriott or other big names.

Dirty, Noisy, Cheap Place

The location is very good. It's in sd downtown, near the harbor. Other than that, everything is horrible. Noisy at night, super dirty, no private bath, indifferent staff, and no parking. But anyway, it's cheap, so i guess you get what you pay for? Tip: park in the train station parking lot several blocks away near the harbor. It might be the cheapest, $5 for overnight parking.
