You get what you pay for...
I chose this hotel for the low rates, and I certainly appreciated that. It's not a dump - it at least has a gym and a cafe. Shared bathrooms, so not the cleanest. Wifi is painfully slow. Friendly staff and generally slightly better than I expected.

Nightlife tip:
Long walk from hotel
Go to the Gaslamp area for clubs. Voyeur and Fluxx are fun but expensive cover and long lines. Henry's Pub for older crowds.

Great deal; super close to downtown!
The deal is, you save money by getting a small single room with a twin-sized bed and shared bathrooms. Depending which room you get, the bathrooms can be a bit of a walk from the room, especially if you have to go late at night. Also, only a few bathrooms per floor have showers, so getting into a shower in the morning can be just a bit of a pain. But other than that, I had a great stay. Beware of the elevators though; they're very old and could use a modernization.

Couple of Travelers!
My Hotel Stay for the SHRM Annual Conf..
I enjoyed the stay at the 500 West Hotel. It was kinda noisy, but I felt save the whole time I was there. I also had a clean towel brought to me each day. There was a fridge readily avaiable to me to store food items. The bathrooms were not as clean as I would have wanted, but it was a shared bathroom. The only thing I did not like was when I accidently left clothes in the bathroom, they were stolen by one of the cleaning staff and they were not honest enough to give me back my stuff. It was my own fault too for leaving it in there. Anyway, if you are on a tight budget this is the hotel for you!!!!!:)

perfect low-buget in ideal location!
The hotel is part of an old YMCA. I believe the rooms are converted from when you used to be able to stay there. $5 daily membership to the YMCA (no pool). Def not the hotel for everybody but perfect for me. I am price-conscious was the best deal in town in this location. I felt safe despite being right down town and my car was safe the entire time. No problems. The bathrooms are outside the room. I didn't mind because my boyfriend and I could shower at the same time. In short it's clean, has a kitchen for guest to use and walking distance to everything just check any expectations out the door.

Perfect spot for the right mindset
Great little hostel near the downtown/gaslamp district. We have stayed there twice and enjoy the proximity to several lively areas. It is a hostel (i.e. small, no private bathroom) but a great alternative for a couple/person on a budget.
