Don't do it!

The whole room is just a little bigger than the size of the bed which just fits in there. The bath room are down the hall and are nasty! I did not stay the night there. This was the worst experience.

500 West.....Isn't a Hotel

500 West, is actually located at 500 West Broadway. If your a foreigner from another country, or a traveling student, then stay here. However, if your an adult wanted to stay in the Gaslamp District, run away as fast as possible. This wasn't a Hotel....They had Homeless People living on the 2nd Floor. Forget about having your own Bathroom. Oh, no! You need to share your bathroom with everyone else on your floor. Granted, they did keep the bathrooms clean, it was just the having to sneak out of the shower, and run to your room in a Towel, that I didn't like. The Cruise Ship Terminal is right across the street from the Santa Fe Depot. So, the only thing that I enjoyed was the convienance of the Trolly Station being right there.

an old YMCA

the hotel is an old 1920's YMCA with bathrooms down the hall and tiny rooms. If we knew this going in, we would not have stayed. for the money, it was a good price.

High price for a hostel

The Hotel 500 used to be the YMCA. Now it is basically a hostel. The best feature is the free wireless internat access. The rooms are small but they keep them clean. The shared baths are a different story. They clean them but you are at the mercy of the other guests as to how clean or disgusting they become during the day or night. If you don't plan to stay long and don't plan to spend much time in your room, it isn't too bad. It is very close to the train and bus stations and walking distance to the Gaslamp district and Convention Center.

Its a hostel

This is really a hostel. The shared bathrooms is allright, but the environment is that of a hostel. Halls are extremely noisy all day long with young tourists crowding the entrance, halls, facilities, etc. Location is AMAZING. Location and price is definately worth the inconveniences.

hostel

This is a hostel. I would recommend this hotel for students and budget travelers. There are no attached bathrooms. Common bathrooms are available on each floor, and are kept clean. Great location. Just a block away from amtrak and public transport stations. This hotel is located centrally (in downtown) and all points of interest can be accessed quickly.

Why not to stay at the YMCA

The room was ok, but with no A/C it was needed to open the window which brought in lots of traffic and other type noises into the room. The shared bathrooms were ok but there were not enough wash clothes for everyone. When I asked for a wash cloth, I was told it was in my towel in my room, only to find out that they had run out of wash clothes after a few floors. I was told I would have one brought to me first thing in the morning (8 AM) when the manager got there, but that wouldn't do me any good since I had be checked out by 7 AM since I was going to a class that started at 7:30 AM.

Hotel or Hostel??

This is a YMCA that's been converted into a hotel. The building is beautiful on the outside, the front desk staff was very friendly. They explained there were 12 bathrooms w/showers per floor in the hallways, I thought I could deal with the shared bathroom concept... I could pay another $10 & get a bathroom in my room! Location wise, you can't beat it...5 minutes from the airport, 1/2 block to a MTA (train), walk to Gaslamp, Old Town, etc.
