Horrible place

Note that this place is very old and has actual iron bars at the windows. I made the mistake to upgrade to a double bed room which was so small that you couldn't even turn around. I was given only one towel to use and I was never able to find a second one at the shared bathrooms. I ended up wiping my hands on my pants. It may be reasonable and close to downtown but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone looking for a descent stay.

Worst place I have ever stayed!

No a/c and so you have to open the windows. The trouble is its super noisy with the windows open and its super hot with the windows closed. I asked the manager to give me a different room for which he willingly obliged. The down side is that he gave me a room which was even worse! This second room had no fan and no fridge. Seems like he wanted to take revenge on me for complaining. Never again will I make the same mistake when I am in SD.

Good Value for money

I stayed for three nights having read bad reviews i had very low expectations. The room is clean small but has all you need; towels get changed every day. Bathrooms are common but you have full privacy into a toilet shower and sink space which you were able to lock there was no waiting for it. Free coffee and apple in the morning 24 reception. The only setback was a very noisy street and constant whistles from the train and street car which made it hard to sleep at night. Take some ear plugs!

At the Y

What you expect from a Y: a small, simple room (bed/table/closet); semi-private hallway bathrooms accessible with your room key; a great exercise area; a commons with kitchen/laundry/TV; free internet. Pluses: location 5 minute walk to the San Diego Gas Lamp District, and a very nice breakfast/lunch Cafe right in the Y. Not for the Hilton crowd, but a much better price/performance ratio than any of the big box hotels, where you pay through your nose for inernet access, breakfast and a bed. Minuses: not all Y guest leave the bathrooms as they entered them, but there's staff on hand for immediate cleanup if needed.

very good value for the money

For the nightly rate this is a bargain. Shared shower and toilet facilities were clean and not overcrowded. The staff was very friendly. There was complimentary coffee and an apple at the reception in the morning. I am very glad I brought ear plugs with me because the noise from the street and the nearby railroad horns when the trains were passing by would otherwise been very unpleasant at night (almost unbearable). Complimentary ear plugs in the hotel are well worth considering.

Strictly business

500 west hotel has the basic needs of the average busy conference visitor who has no time for fancy daisies just a clean comfy place to sleep. 7minutes walk to Convention Center. Nearby eateries and excellent shopping center. Room is small but ok for one person. A sink in the bedrooms even if toilet or bathroom are shared, would greatly increase convenience. Windows need double glazing to reduce noise from Broadway. Kitchen has microwave n light cooking materials. Not a family place. 24hr free fast Internet access.

what i expected

I have family in europe and this hostel was just as i expected. It is clean and comfortable and quieteter than I expected. close to nice restrauents and bars and lots of close parking under 12 dollars a day(or night) and close bus and train lines, a gym belonging to the ymca and a 7-11 in the back(they stop selling alcohol at 10pm so get you beer before that) a good deal for the price.

This is a hostel, not a hotel.

The gentlemen at the front desk was very friendly and accommodating. By far the highlight of my stay was the staff. The elevator seams pretty sketchy and eventually was broken by the end of our 4 night stay. The room was by far the smallest I have ever seen. The bathroom was located fairly far down the hall. Note the rooms do not have bathrooms. There are "dorm style" unisex bathrooms to share.
