The worst
It was so bad that I left 2 nights earlier than what I had paid for. The worst experience of my life for the money paid.

Adequate Accommodations
I reserved two non-smoking rooms, each with a king bed. They were clean and orderly albeit a bit worn-out. One bathtub had a crack in its other edge. Overall, the rooms were adequate for our stay.

Very good breakfast and lunch offered by historic Sang's Cafe in downtown Salinas near the National Steinbeck Center. Large servings and reasonaable prices.

Old Hotel that needed remodeled. The room smelled. Rust came out of the pipes when we turned the shower on.

Times are Tough for All
Fair enough for cost. Times are tough for several and same is now affecting every level of service (everywhere I go). The host attempted to talk me out of the breakfast that was close to bleak (starch, coffee, milk, orange juice) excepting hot mini-waffles. Complimentary national paper was appreciated. The room was impeccable given the age of the building. Some odd odor (minor) from the bathroom plumbing. Vanity light had a mind of its own. At mid-morning duing my late morning mediations, the cleaning lady was rude with impossible hysterics; thus, I nearly gave up on finding a quiet inner place before she moved on from all her racket. Though I was happy it was there, the fitness room equipment needs to go back to the thrift store where it came from. The room's cable TV had the widest selection I've seen in decades (no kidding). The site is far enough from the freeway to be rather quiet while close enough to walk to/through the historic downtown. Co-tennants included similar polite gov't contract worker types with quiet focus and no rable rousing.

good location, tired bathroom
easy walk to Main Street restaurants and Steinbeck Museum. Enjoyed the salads at Norma's coffee shop across the street. The hotel was a good value except for the bathroom which really needs work. Good continental breakfast.

No warmth, no cheer
The rooms were very clean and well-equipped. But there was barely any staff so services suffered. Many of my important phone calls were not transferred to my room because the person at the front desk was busy mopping floors outside or clearing breakfast!! That's so crazy. And the owners were not very friendly or helpful.

Salinas has great dining places within a short walk from the hotel. Great cuisine, fresh food and friendly waiters make the restaurants must-visit places.

Decent
My boyfriend and I stayed here because he was racing at Laguna Seca raceway for the weekend and I wanted to sleep in a real bed, rather than camping like we did the time before, which killed my back. When we arrived, it was probably around 11 PM and the door to the front desk was locked. We had to go up to a window and ring a bell and wait for someone to come check us in. The man who checked us in wasn't rude, he just didn't say much and wasn't very helpful-i.e. he didn't even point out the direction where our room was. Also, because my bf was racing for the weekend, we drove there in his big truck, with a tow dolly attached to tow his car that he would be racing. Unfortunately, the parking lot is VERY small so we had to park out on the street and walk a ways to carry our stuff up to the room. I realize for most people, this wouldn't be an issue, but if you're coming with a big vehicle, just know you may not be able to park in the lot. We got to our room and it was fairly spacious. We had a room with a king bed, a fridge, and microwave (which I specifically wanted since I was bringing food). There were the usual things like a T.V., iron, ironing board, some hangers, and nightstands. The only issue I really had with space was that they put a small table and chairs right in front of the air conditioner and it was hard to sit at the table and/or get to the AC-there really wasn't any other place to put the table though. The bathroom was decent enough. The shower/shower head were fine. Whoever did the tile didn't do a good job but the bathroom served it's proper function. Also, in our room, the light in the bathroom didn't have a cover-it was just a hole with a bulb in it and lots of dust/dirt/cobwebs/whatever from inside the ceiling...kind of gross but not too bad. The one thing I noticed is that our sink pipes seemed to have a small leak/hole. When I was washing my hands, I felt a little water spray on my feet. Later on, I heard water drops hitting the carpet (it wasn't really obnoxious or anything though). The noise issue: we were on the second floor, so we didn't have anyone above us. However, we had some annoying neighbors on one side of us who were up at 1 AM and we could hear them b/c the walls were kind of thin. Other than that, the hotel doesn't seem to be in a noisy place-just depends who your neighbors are. Bottom line: for $64/night, this hotel really wasn't a bad deal. The issues I listed above are really minor, and could easily be fixed.

There seem to be a decent amount of restaurants nearby. We went to a pizza place, I think it was called the Monterey Brewing Co. It's a few miles from the hotel and they had yummy pizza and other choices and they brew their own beer.

Never to Return to Ramada for the GP
We hit the MotoGP and having been at other small Ramadas, thought this would be a decent motel stay. The sink was broken and leaking all over the floor, light was broken, room was damaged/unclean and the small dining area was dirty and not maintained. Our maid left the window open after we left for the event as well. Mgnt did nothing. The locale was decent to the event but next time, we will avoid this poorly managed inn.

The Fish House in Salinas was a nice dinner house with very good seafood & service. After the Sunday GP, it was quiet and perfect for the post-race R&R.

Dangerous in a fire.
Our room was on the first floor and had a window at the back of the room. The window had security bars. The release was double bolted inside with two heavy nuts. If there was a fire and the front door was blocked, we would have been trapped. Isn't there some kind of fire regulation that requires a quick release to open the bars from the inside without having to use a 3/4-inch wrench?
