Disappointing stay

The hotel is beautiful, however seemed biased against 3rd party travelers. Room was very shabby, worn and not at all what I expected. The rate that I paid was the exact rate that they advertised on their site. They did not have my information at check in and made a point that I had used a third party. Overall just a less than average room.

Great View

We stayed on the fourth floor overlooking the lagoon. There's a pastry shop and lounge right off of the hotel lobby where we could socialize, and enjoy our favorite beverage while watching sports on television. Plenty of ways to get exercise were available. A nice quiet place to enjoy walk.

Cost Effective but Decor Challenged

We stay at the Sofitel every year on our trip to San Francisco for a traditional Thanksgiving with friends. We dined out every other evening, went to San Francisco for shopping on Black Friday and had an altogether wonderful time. HOWEVER, the Sofitel has been boasting refurbished rooms for three years now and they haven't delivered. The only thing they refurbished was their lobby and other public spaces. The rooms are shabby and the grouting is coming out of the tiles in the bathroom; the curtains are dingy and the rugs stained. This is definitely not a five-star. The location for us was perfect, however - less than 2 miles from our friends - this is the reason we choose them. Not next year.

Amici's Italian restaurant in Redwood City, about 3/4 mile from the hotel. Also, definitely eat at John's Grill on Ellis near Powell in San Francisco - where Dashiell Hammett wrote "The Maltese Falcon." Excellent food and wine. It's been open since 1908.

You get what you pay for

We stayed at the Sofitel because we were visiting family over the Thanksgiving holiday who live in Redwood City, and it appeared to offer the best combination of price, quality, and proximity to my sister's home. I assumed the great deal we thought we were getting on the room was due to the fact that the Sofitel (and it seems this location in particular) primarily caters to business travelers and thus had a low occupancy over a long holiday weekend. While the description [...] noted that it was not fully renovated, we were shocked to open the door to our room on the top floor and feel as though we walked into 1987 again! Not only was the room dated, but everything appeared dingy, the bed was worn so both sides sloped downward, and the furniture was beaten up. The furnishings didn't even all match. Not at all what you would expect after entering the lobby which was gorgeous. On the whole the staff were very pleasant, but the room was pretty miserable and the housekeeping was hit or miss. If you'd like them to bring you fresh washcloths each day or put away the hairdryer apparently you need to ask someone. I would definitely not pay a 4 star rate to stay here because the rooms are not 4 star quality and there are plenty of other hotels in the area.

Time-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

There is a Starbuck's in a shopping center less than a mile from the hotel that is walking distance or a veyr short drive if you need a coffee fix on the way to or from the hotel.

room reservation

Stay at hotel was great! However, when we checked in they did not have a reservation under our name, Mark Jones. They did however have a reservation for "Clint" Jones and allowed us to use this reservation for us - hoping there was a mistake [...]. LUCKILY, we had printed out a receipt before we left. I doubt if they would have let us stay there without that. This was pretty disconserting since we'd just spent 5 hours in the car to get there and it was 11 pm at night.

This is a lovely hotel - but I

This is a lovely hotel - but I made a mistake and thought I was booking somewhere in the centre of San Francisco - as it says 'San Francisco Bay' on the description. However, this hotel is 30 miles out of the city in the middle of a business park. I arrived on Saturday morning and it was very very quiet as it is surrounded by office buildings so there was not a soul around. Also, to get to Downtown San Francisco they suggested I took a shuttle to the airport and the bus from there! Other than that, the hotel itself is lovely and if the location suits you I would thoroughly recommend it.
