Ace Hotel and Swim Club is built on the foundation of a 1965 Howard Johnson hotel and the property has been revamped to maintain the 1960s era charm. Funky, edgy decor creates a distinctive look, and rooms combine well-worn leather couches with luxurious bedding, expertly melding gritty, 60s-type furnishings with modern amenities. Just south of downtown Palm Springs and close to the mountains, Ace Hotel and Swim Club gives a nod toward the coolness of the past, in a contemporary setting.
Highlights
  • Funky, 1960s-inspired decor
  • Spa services with organic ingredients
  • Close to Palm Springs and mountains
Rooms

Ace Hotel and Swim Club rooms boast eye-catching, distinctive details. Screens around the beds feature 1960s-era photos tacked up with binder clips. Chairs seem rescued from old schoolhouses or offices. Canvas drapes are pinned back to reveal patio spaces, giving rooms the feel of a safari tent. The effect is a charming, retro atmosphere that feels comfortable and welcoming. Suites offer separate living areas and some feature vinyl record players in the room.

Features

Ace Hotel and Swim Club features an old, restored diner called King's Highway that offers traditional American favorites. Chefs use local, seasonal and organic ingredients whenever possible and the meats are sustainably raised. The Amigo Room bar serves classic and creative cocktails using fresh juices and house-made mixers.

Guests can also borrow one of the hotel's Weber grills for a room's private patio or terrace. The hotel offers communal outdoor hearths if guests want to mingle and make new friends while preparing their outdoor feasts.

The Feel Good Spa at Ace Hotel and Swim Club provides simple, practical treatments geared toward boosting health and relaxation while treating the senses to a luxurious experience. The spa focuses on using natural, organic ingredients and offers purifying clay masks, body scrubs, hot stone massage, deep tissue massage, cooling skin treatments and facials. The extensive pool area offers another opportunity to relax and recharge.

Ace Hotel and Swim Club is close to numerous activities in the area. The Smoke Tree Stables offers horseback riding by the hour, while Indian Canyons Golf boasts two semi-private, championship courses. Also close is the Palm Springs Tennis Club.

Dining

Amigo Bar
There is the original old ranch-hand bar, the Amigo Room, which we have restored to its high/low glory and we have added an old ice cream truck- the Short Bus- as our poolside bar. The Trailer bar- an old caravan with graphics by the Date Farmers- will roll up to the Commune for events. Unlike typical Palm Springs bars, we emphasize quality micro-distilleries and fresh mixing ingredients like real, squeezed juices, infusions, and homemade syrups.
King's Highway Restaurant
We took the old Denny's restaurant on the property and unearthed a cool terrazzo floor, sandblasted the flagstone walls and recovered the booths in saddle leather. The food redefines roadside diner fare as part of an American peasant food tradition-rustic, direct, resourceful, sensuous, and social. The focus will be on fresh, organic, and local ingredients that expand the stereotypical view of Palm Springs to create a regional cuisine grounded in a sense of place. We understand that food is first and foremost a series of relationships not only in the eating but in the preparing and the sourcing. We believe that cooking should always be inspired but never pretentious and that food should be accessible but not ordinary. In feeling, we imagine this experience like the most amazing backyard barbeque you've ever been to.

Ace Hotel with family

We went out to Palm Springs for a long weekend and chose the Ace because it looked so stylish and fun. And it was. But maybe it was just a little too cool for school, or at least the other clientele were. Our room was a king suite with 2 daybeds for our kids. The room was super cool, comfy beds, nice towels, great balcony, but it was smaller than we expected from hotel photos that made it seem like the kids beds would be more separated from our own. Not the end of the world though. We had to call twice to have the beds made up for the kids and the last guests left some fruit loops under the day beds that had not been swept up--yuck. We also had no towels but when we got them, they wer thick and big. The big pool area is very comfortable, plenty of lounge chairs and shades, fantastic music playing, good pool side bar service. But on Saturday the area was so packed with drinking guests, those tragically hip ones, that it was uncomfortable for my kids, and impossible to get seats. Part of the problem was that ther was a wedding booked in the other half of the property so the second pool was closed to us. But I think all those people came over for fun to our side! We just went to town for the afternoon and it was lovely again on Sunday. We borrowed the bikes for a beautiful ride through the surrounding neighborhood, although they needed a little TLC they are free so can't complain too much. Overall very enjoyable, stylish weekend stay. I wish I could give it 3.5 stars as it was better than most when not packed but maybe it is like that on most weekends which really spoils it for families.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Within a couple of blocks there was Elmer's which has the best pancakes we ever ate! Old school Palm Springs diner type restaurant with photos of Frank Sinatra on the wall, good service. Then right across the street a great little cafe called Koffi, good for breakfast bagels, coffee, and snacks.

We enjoyed our stay, wish it were longer

This resort is 60's quirky, 50's friendly, and 2011 clean. Dissapointed that the bed was low, and the floors were concrete. That said, couldn't have had a more fun week in Palm Springs. Early AM bike rides, (you must do this, not just take pictures of them!) then a quiet morning swim in the heated pool, great breakfast in the hotel restaurant(again with the floors!) afternoon siesta, downtown street fair on Thursday night, dinner at a unique Mexican restaurant, most perfect day. Majority of guest were 1/2 our age, and enjoyed the hotel in a different way than us.

Shopping tip: Short drive from hotel

Every Thursday night, at least 1/2 mile of Palm Drive is closed and many artists and street vendors set up in a great street fair in the cool evening. Many people, and shops stay open late too.

ACE HOTEL PALM SPRINGS

The staff was efficient, courteous and friendly at all times. The maintenance and cleaning staff were particularly helpful. The hotel is "funky" modern. The rooms are adequately furnished with 60's modern furniture, all be it reasonably inexpensive and easily maintained. The on-site restaurant was excellent with fast service and a full ranged menu. Vespa's were rentable at the hotel! The pool areas were well maintained, though at night tended to get a bit noisy. A room not overlooking the pool area mitigates the noise completely.

The on-site restaurant had an unusually wide range of selections. The staff were amazingly attentive and courteous. Though seating was always available, the restaurant is very popular, even with people not staying at the ACE HOTEL. It was GREAT to have this restaurant available for breakfast as well as lunch, dinner and for a late evening snack. The only downside to the ROOM itself was that there was no way to make coffee or tea in the morning, without going down to the restaurant or ordering room service. I would like to have had a personal coffee/hot water maker.

Ace Hotel and Swim Club-Palm Springs

From the time we arrived we were treated well by the laid back and friendly staff. The room was clean and cool and ready when we arrived. The pool area is very well maintained and food and drink are available poolside. The grounds are extremely clean and well maintained, not easy in the desert. The place has a nice charm and vibe to it. The only thing we could say were on the negative end were the TV System-it had this hopeless tv guide menu and was a little wonky on the picture quality. Also at the pool area a house fed music system plays pretty much all day and into the early evening. If you want quiet by the pool time, you won't get it here! All in all though i would stay here again and recommend it to a friend. The location is great and within a short drive or bike ride away (bikes are free to rent and covered by a 20 dollar a day resort fee paid directly to the hotel) The pros far outweigh the cons here and it's a great spot for the buck!!
