Nestled along the shoreline of California's famed Monterey Peninsula, Asilomar is a tranquil ocean front retreat cradled by forests and white sand beaches. Designed by acclaimed architect Julia Morgan and embracing the Arts & Crafts architectural style, the Asilomar conference center harmonizes with its natural surroundings and has played host to thousands of visitors since its founding in 1913. Rich with history, scenic beauty and serenity, Asilomar is the ideal location for group meetings, corporate retreats, weddings, family reunions and vacation getaways. What began as a YWCA retreat in 1913 is now a charming ocean-side Monterey beach resort for travelers seeking respite and renewal. The California resort's secluded guest rooms and suites offer tranquility and harmony - a wonderful escape from the demands of everyday life. Asilomar is peaceful and rustic, with 313 rooms located in 30 buildings nestled along the shoreline forests and dunes. Accommodations here are truly dedicated to rest and reflection; therefore guest rooms are free of distractions such as telephones and televisions, but they do have Alarm/Clock radio. $12 flat site fee will to be added per room per day.

Located on site, the Crocker Dining Hall is a spacious and welcoming gathering spot with high-beamed ceilings, stone pillars, hard wood floors and incomparable views of the forest and the dunes of Asilomar State Beach. The hall can accommodate up to 850, and guests also have the option of having custom planned menus served in one of the 20 special event rooms.

Spectacular ocean view setting

Asilomar Conference Grounds is unique. First the grounds are really a state park with walking access to the beach. The buildings are architectural jewels with the original buildings built between 1913-1928. The buildings were designed by famed architect Julia Morgan. With this in mind, realize that Asilomar cannot be compared to a 5 star hotel with a golf course. Asilomar is a beautiful setting that allows the guests to interact with the natural environment. There are no televisions or phones in the rooms-we think that is a plus in this environment, others may find that disappointing. Free internet is available in the rooms. Most of the guests at Asilomar are attending conferences and most of the amenities are directed towards large group events. We attended a wedding on the grounds and stayed extra nights to enjoy the setting. We rented bikes, available on site, and had a marvelous time riding along Sunset Drive and Ocean View Drive. Asilomar has a restaurant on site (Crocker Hall) which has good catered food, but I recommend getting breakfast elsewhere if you are not attending a conference. There are numerous good restaurants just minutes away. There are walking tours available on site, and it is easy to find beautiful places to sit and simply enjoy the scenery. The room furnishings for the standard rooms are generally plain, but clean and functional-that rates Asilomar only 3 stars, but the setting could not be more beautiful-5 stars!

If you are on a tight budget, you can bring your own breakfasts or lunches in a food cooler. There are many picnic tables and places to sit in a gorgeous setting and enjoy your own food without looking out of place.

The Best

This place is so well located, and so relaxing. Deer are feeding on the grounds, and there is a wonderful board walk through the dunes. And the Pacific Ocean is a five minute walk where one can enjoy observing birds, dogs, and surfers. Free billiards and a wood fire in a lobby so pleasing to the eye and so woodsy in feel that you'd think you were in a Yosemite lodge. This is definitely a place where you want to hang around and let those cares melt away.

Great location, out dated rooms

There's great value to be had at this peaceful Oceanside retreat. But beware of the accommodations stuck in the 80's including the bathrooms, bedding and overall decor. Its proximity to the beach, being in between Monterey and Carmel just off the end of the 17 mile drive, and general peacefulness are its main redeeming qualities. If you need a TV to be entertained, you're out of luck. Bring a book!

awesome view...unpleasant room atmosphere

Everything around Asilomar is amazing...unfortunately the room itself is totally unpleasant. Carpet needs reduing...wall papers were peeling off..I'm better off spending money on a motel 6 and save 100+ then spending 200 bucks on a room that doesn't beat motel 6... Other than that...the location was AWESOME!! Would totally go back and visit...just won't be reserving a room from there no more until it gets renovated.

Beautiful surroundings

Minimalist amenities but overall a good place to stay, especially if you are planning local activities and not spending a whole lot of time in the room. The beds are comfortable and grounds were very nice.

Baby Deer & Solitude

My girlfriend and I stayed for 2 nights to do some hiking in the surrounding areas. We found out right away how odd the "bedding may vary" option is.. We were given a room with a queen and 3 singles. It was also an inconvenience for us to not have an in-room fridge. Regardless of the bedding and lack of fridge, microwave, and coffee maker the location is heaven. It's super quiet. We had baby deer strolling around our building, and the private pathway to the Asilomar State Beach is perfection. It was different not having a tv, but we loved it. Overall this is a great place to relax.

Adult summer camp

Rooms are very basic and outdated but the location and amenities make it a jewel. A boardwalk trail leads you across the street to the beach. The lodge has pool tables, ping pong tables and a huge area for sitting inside or outside. We had s'mores by the Bon fire and enjoyed the stars. The staff is so friendly and helpful. Booked another trip when he got home!
