St. Regis blows them away

If you love to shop this is a good spot for you. This hotel is located amidst various highways, so there's traffic noise; try to get level ten or higher (and not above the lounge). All doubles are directly across from the elevators. There are tons of stores and great restaurants within walking distance. At "Fashion Island" there's probably 200 stores and twenty restaurants. No programs/activities for children. At F.I. the kids can enjoy the koi pond, carousel ($2.00 a ride, get tickets before getting in line) and "dancing fountains." This is a lovely place with views of the ocean. The food court has about a dozen fast food places and you can dine outdoors by a wall of falling water or by the koi pond. For fine dining you have Canaletto (so good), Fleming's and Roy's. Considering all the dining experiences within a ten- minute walk, after dining at the hotel restaurant once, we always left the hotel to eat. The hotel food is very average and pricey. The restaurant's outdoor dining would be nicer without the maintenance truck traffic and gas fumes. Some staff are exceptional - That means you [...]! -(bellmen, valets), but overall I don't think this hotel merits a 4.5 star rating (except for lobby bathrooms - very nice!). I'm jaded, because our last stay in the area was at the St. Regis, so coming from that perspective on service, amenities, restaurants, etc., this hotel is nowhere near those standards. One day leaving the hotel at 10:00am, and returning at 10:30pm, we found our room still hadn't been made-up. Getting Disneyland tickets from the concierge was laborious and time-consuming. I suggest buying tickets on-line (same price, and you can't "lose" them). We felt we made a poor choice on this hotel. For a few more pennies you can experience nirvana at the St. Regis. p.s. Near "The Montage Resort" in Laguna Beach, you'll find the most lovely ocean walkway and beach - stunning! This beach is good for children as the bay is fairly calm and has great tide pools. You can park (for a fee) in front of the resort rooms.

There's a restaurant called "The Beachcomber at Crystal Cove" right on the beach, that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food is very good, casual atmosphere and of course, such a lovely view. You can park across from the PCH and either take a shuttle ($1.00) or enjoy the walk to the restaurant.

Not bad...

The hotel was nice and more on the upscale-side. We were there for Knott's Berry Farm's Haunted night and the drive wasn't too bad (we missed a lot of traffic). The locale is so-so and Fashion Island is pretty over-rated. If you want to go to the beach, you're probably better off getting a hotel closer to the coastline.

My weekend stay at Island Hotel

Very nice rooms, but they had no coffee - you have to walk down to the lobby to get coffee or order room service coffee. There is a daily charge for accessing internet and the service is difficult to navigate and get online. The pool has a wonderful fireplace by it, but the pool is by some kind of huge industrial air conditioning unit so the pool area is so noisy it's like being on the runway at the airport - not relaxing. Otherwise, good service, great place.

First Class Hotel

Its in a convenient location in Newport Beach. Next to Fashion Island Mall, but a view of the Ocean in the far distance. Excellent service provided by all staff members. Rooms are well appointed, but the premium king rooms are smaller than I would expect for an upgraded room type. We found the fitness center very well equipped and not very crowded with nice windows overlooking the property. The concierge was very helpful and made our stay very memorable. Great value for the money. We booked through Orbitz and received a great rate.

Close to a number of great restaurants in Newport. The Island Hotel has a courtesy shuttle to local restaurants. We went to Mastro's Ocean Club. The bar area is very popular with the locals. A bit of a wait for a table, but lively atmosphere and great food. http://www.azeats.com/mastros/

For something a little different, I would recommend La Habana for dinner or lunch. Great Cuban traditional dishes. A little closer is the Tommy Bahama restaurant, which I would highly recommend for a great lunch!

resort style

I was very pleased with Island Hotel's very plush stylish rooms. The staff was pleasant and efficent, our room was quiet and overall we had a great stay. I usually wouldn't select a large resort style hotel for my personal vacation, but the smaller boutique hotels in Newport Beach were all booked this weekend. This hotel is in a quite suburban area next to the mall and not super close to the main Newport Beach tourist areas. However, if I was staying on business I'd give it an A+. It's walking distance to a few nice restaurants like Roy's at the mall.

very ejoyable!

My husband and I stayed for one night to celebrate our anniversary. I mentioned our anniversary upon checking in and we were upgraded to an ocean view room. We also received a complementary dessert. When we came back from dinner, we went to the lounge for a drink. The entertainment was great! We were pleasantly surprised. Great location. Comfortable bed. Staff was just a little slow to deliver things to the room, such as a coffee maker.

Nice Hotel but ripoff parking fee.

The room was nice in and of itself. However there was alot of noise coming from the room next door. It sounded like a cell phone in speaker mode. Also there was music audible from the next room as well. It was not loud it's just that the noise was coming through the doors adjoining the rooms. I also booked the hotel for one night for 2 people. I was not charged for parking but my girlfriend was, for $29.00. She was a guest! I think this was a complete ripoff. We went to attend a wedding. Parking validation slips were provided however this was not honored the next morning.

Shopping tip: Short walk from hotel

Fashion Island shopping center is one of the premier shopping areas in Orange County. There are a lot of high end stores. There are also the usual gamut of chain restaurants, mostly in the moderate price range.
