Disappointing

We paid extra for a courtyard/pool view room, to receive one tucked in the corner with a view only if you craned your next and stood on tip toes! Our louvred blinds would not shut and we asked for them to be fixed but although attempted it was not fixed and no attempt was made to inform us of this at all. We paid for massages at the spa but you are not entitled to use any of the other Spa facilities - these are reserved for members only. Anything other than the room was extra including parking. Hotel suited to moneyed, elderly Americans

The Good & Bad

Hotel room was clean and beds were certainly comfortable. I didn't have the noise problem that others seemed to in their reviews, but did have some of the same other problems. I read other reviews and called ahead to make sure that I had a king bed, since that seemed to be an issue for others. Once I was checking in, it was the same issue. Confirmed a king, but the only rooms available had two queens. It was a no show on the turn down service and the front desk staff was not friendly at all. As a female traveling alone, I was suprised when I walked into the room and there was a maintenance man working... On the other hand, the waitstaff and valets were amazingly friendly and helpful. They shuttled me around when another guest snagged the cab, made sure I knew how to get back to the hotel, gave their recommendations on places/restaurants/bars to visit, and more! Can't say enough about their service. It was very appreciated by myself!

Beautiful stay in Newport Beach

This was our 3rd stay at Balboa Bay Club. We were there to celebrate our 25th anniversary. When we arrived in our room we had a balloon bouquet and chocolates waiting for us. We also brought along our 23 y/o daughter (her first trip to Orange County) she fell in love with it as much as we have!

Long walk to a comfortable room

The room was very comfortable with a nice balcony. Enjoyed the bar, Duke's Place with the large painting of John Wayne as a skipper. Fun to watch the yachts right outside the window. Because it is a sprawling 3-story hotel rather than a high-rise, my invalid wife had a very long way to walk to our room at the farthest corner of the hotel from the front desk.

The Crab Cooker restaurant: a classic, casual seafood restaurant. Everything the same as it was 45 years ago.

Balboa Bay Club

The hotel is nice and well maintained but highly overpriced for what you get. There are specific "MEMBERS ONLY" areas that hotel guests do not have access to. The in house lounge "The Duke" has a $40 minimum drink charge. Oh yeah and don't forget about that $28/day parking charge (BTW there is no self park option!) Staying at this Resort does not give you any special privileges or benefits as some resorts do. While the room is nice and the bed is very comfortable you would be much better staying at a another property that offers golf or tennis or some other activity that you are interested in. The cost of the boat rentals is ridiculously overpriced. Food is scarce in the immediate area but Huntington beach is about 10 minutes north and offers a great variety of food options. Nice hotel but not worth the price!
