Jewel by the Bay

My husband and I needed a getaway to a quiet, secluded place that had activities and shopping within walking distance, as we were not driving. We picked the perfect place at the Monterey Plaza Hotel and Spa. From day one, we were treated like royalty, with the complimentary hotel car available to take us to Pacific Grove and around Monterey Bay. Right on the water, this hotel provides tranquility and vistas we could only imagine, and the touch of nature furnished by local seals barking in the distance at sunrise and at dusk. You can walk to Old Fisherman's Wharf or Cannery Row, including the Monterey Aquarium. If you buy aquarium tickets at the concierge, you get two day tickets. Everyone was friendly and helpful, and, when my husband's Canon film camera needed a specific battery, they drove us to town and waited while we found it at Walgreens. Rooms are impeccable, with comfy pillows and mattress. If we had more time, we would have used the hot tub. Sit by the fire pit outside at night, or cozy up by the fire indoors in the lobby with the player piano. Make sure you walk along the beach when the tide recedes and along the wharf to see the many seals and otters that come up to bask...bring your camera. A great getaway, indeed.

Not bad. But far from really good.

Paying more doesn't necessarily mean to get more. The view and location is nothing compared to other beach hotels (such as seacrest).
