Monterey inn offers spacious rooms, free breakfast and afternoon snacks

Located in the heart of downtown Monterey, the Colton Inn is surrounded by historic adobe structures and lies within minutes of the top city attractions, including Fisherman's Wharf, Cannery Row and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Half a mile from the Colton Inn, the Monterey Conference Center is the premier convention and meeting space in the area. Spacious Colton Inn guest rooms are recently refreshed with down comforters and 400-thread-count sheets. A dry sauna, a sun deck and a gas grill are also available.

Highlights
  • Many guest rooms feature a fireplace
  • Free breakfast and afternoon snacks
  • Within walking distance of Fisherman's Wharf
Location

Just a few minutes from the Colton Inn, Fisherman's Wharf Monterey serves as a central hub of social activity in this bayside city. Originally built in 1870, the wharf was at the heart of the commercial fishing industry in the area for decades. Today, Fisherman's Wharf plays host to restaurants, fishing, live theater, souvenir shops and folks who just like to take in the view.

Rooms

Central Coast sunshine spills into Colton Inn guest rooms, many of which feature balconies, fireplaces, whirlpool tubs, microwave ovens or refrigerators. Choose one king or two queen-sized beds. Free Wi-Fi Internet access, cable television, DVD/VHS players and a library of free movies are also provided. Coffee-makers available upon request.

Dining

Complimentary continental breakfast is served daily from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Enjoy complimentary afternoon snacks on the sun deck.

For dinner, numerous fantastic options lie within a few minutes of the Colton Inn. The Crown and Anchor is a Monterey favorite. The menu and the decor evoke the British Isles instead of the Central Coast of California -- try the fish and chips, or steak and mushroom pie. But with food this good, and an everyone-is-welcome attitude, The Crown and Anchor is one that cannot be missed.

Review

The Colton inn is located within walkin distance from downtown and the warf and shops, the room was clean and smelled fresh. The only drawback was that it is across the street from the fire station which sounds can be disturbing in the middle of the night.

brilliantly priced two night stay

Colton Inn is a lovely 5 minute walk into the heart of Monterey. We wandered through the local farmers market on the Tuesday afternoon then popped onto a sailing boat to see the bay from a different vantage point, spectacular! The staff here were most pleasant and very helpful. It was nice to be able to borrow a few DVD's to watch at night at no charge. Great range of films too! When I say the room was noisy it was only due to some seasonal repair work being done on the outside walkway, it proved beneficial as a wake up call to get us up and moving on our drive to Big Sur.

Go see Dutch at Monterey sailing, down on the Pier and take a trip out on a 30ft boat, it's a great way to see the Monterey Bay and it's marine critters up close.

Interesting location

The Colton Inn is an older, rather out of date motel in an interesting location. The rooms are comfortable and spacious but a little dated. When we were there the elevator was out of order, yet we were put on the second floor and forced to carry everything up wet and slippery concrete stairs, when at the same time none of the lower level rooms were in use. There was no adjustment for this inconvenience. Two other issues, parking is tight and can be difficult to manuver, and the office is closed at night and does not open until 7:00 AM. The location makes up for some of the negatives, being in a very historic area with lots to see and convenient to the rest of the Monterey Penninsula area.

Very good

Great location but small parking. Good breakfast but no breakfast room. Very clean but rooms look really old; vanity renovated and worked properly. Stuff is very friendly; coffee and other drinks available 24 hours. Price/service, price/location ratio very reasonable.

Great location, excellent staff

My wife and I stayed at the Colton for four days while I attended a conference in town. At first, we were a little dismayed since we got a room facing the road, but noise was never a problem (it is worth noting, however, that a back room will get you a slightly quieter view of a babbling brook and nicer trees). As time went on, our enjoyment of the hotel increased dramatically due to the friendliness of the staff. They were courteous, intelligent, and very helpful to us both. Also, the hotel location, while not on the beach (or within view of it) is just right. Stroll to the library next door and peruse their stacks, or keep walking to the art museum. The shops and restaurants in downtown Monterey are a brief walk away through the lovely little town--we recommend Isabella's on the wharf (and we definitely do not recommend the Mucky Duck--they had rats). It was a great stay, and we'd definitely do it again!

Great Deal, Great Service

My partner and I stayed at the Colton Inn for a few days between Christmas and New Years. It's in a great location, walking distance to downtown Monterey and Fisherman's Wharf, a five minute drive from Cannery Row, and a ten minute drive from Carmel! We stayed two nights and had a wonderful time: the staff here are incredibly helpful and so nice! A fireplace in the room, which was a great size (though the pillows on the bed were a bit hard) and well decorated, really helped to make our short getaway cozy. The continental breakfast in the morning is great, a nice selection of pastries, fruit and cereals in the lobby. Coffee, tea, fruit and cookies are in the lobby also, all day until 10:30 pm. Though the lobby does close at 11pm, the willingness to help of the staff made up for the early closing time. The room was clean, not spotless, but incredible for a small hotel, and the toiletries provided were high quality and a nice touch. We also had a nice little patio area, which would probably be nice in the spring. Beware of the vending machines, though, a few of out midnight snacks were expired.

Excellent Stay, Service, and Location

We loved the location, not amongst all the other hotels but an easy walk to downtown and the wharf. Great service, courteous, and the goodies in the lobby were great. Our only complaint, the bed was very hard. Bring a layer like a comforter to sleep on.

Stay away from the wharf restaurants, go to the cannery area for seafood and downtown for food at the Crown and Anchor, the best breakfast crepes at the Monterey Crepe Co on Alvarado, and the BEST coffee and pastries at Plumes one block up from Crepes restaurant, almost right across the street from the Crown and Anchor.
