Great location plus mountain charm

This is a small hotel that has the character you'd expect from an independent hotel like this. The location can't be beat and the rooms are comfortable. The main drawbacks are that there's no elevator (which can make hauling in a lot of ski equipment challenging) and while there's plenty of free parking, it's not covered parking, so if there's a snowstorm, expect to be digging.

good location for a trip to mammoth

I was there w my hubby to see mammoth's rainbow falls & devils postpile they were 30 mins driving away from the hof lodge, we ate at the restaraunt which was very convenient because it is in the hotel on the bottom floor, the waiter was a bit rude and the food was 32 average for one plate, I did not like my new york steak because the sauce had wine in it which I would have liked but I thought it was too overbearing. I do not know why the waiter was rude, we waited very very long and had to ask for a refill after about 40mins of waiting and the food took 4EVER over an hour it was simply insane. The waiter ws so rude, it might have been because my hubby is mexican, and there were only white (german, french and americans) there, but it might have just been because he was rude. The other staff at the hotel desk were VERY nice and friendly, the location is great, they have a jacuzzi, but no elevator which sucks for all the bags you have to carry up and down, but they have movie rentals which is great and I thought the desk staff were extremly nice. If you are a skier you would love the location, just dont eat at the restaraunt because its not worth it I should have just ordered pizza or went to a nice place somewhere else.

Only stayed one night...wish we could have stayed longer! The beds were EXTREMELY comfy! Right next to the ski lifts of Mammoth Canyon.

Austria Hof Lodge Suite is no sweet deal

Checked in at the Austria Hof Lodge and was greeted by a gentleman who clearly needed an energy drink. About the only words he could mutter were to ask for my credit card and to explain in no uncertain terms that there was a $100 depoist on the room key which must be returned by 11:00 a.m. We advised him that we'd be checking out at 7:00 a.m. and he said "Cool!" It appeared to be all he could do to get us checked in, then we had to drive back down the hill to the Westin where our "Suite" was located. Gate key didn't work to get us into parking, then the room key didn't work. After a phone call we had drive back up the hill to see the drowsey front desk person at the Austria Hof Lodge again, who gave us the "I didn't make up that card" excuse. No apology or sorry for the inconvenience, just sent us back down the hill on our way. Room was no suite. Average size room at best, though it did have a small refridgerator that smelled foul, a sink, cook top and dishwasher. Of course the diswasher was full and needed to be run. Thanks! Beds were ok but the pillows were wafer thin and offered no comformt. Needless to say it was not a very comfortable nights sleep. We returned the next morning at 7:00 a.m. as promised to check out but no one was at the front desk. We slipped our room cards through the window and hope they were found. As of this morning there's no charge to my credit card so I'm hopeful that's a good sign. Overall I would not recommend the Austria Hof Lodge Suite to any other [...] travelers. There are many other lodging acommodations available and we will be looking for another location when we return. As the saying goes if it looks to be too good to be true it is, and this room definitely fits the bill. Not a good reflection on [...] at all, so I may go back to using a competitors site becuase we've had better luck there.

Austria Hof

There are no services at the hotel: no room service, no bellman, no laundry whatsoever, no elevator. Breakfast consisted of muffins to be consumed on a dirty sofa. The hotel smelled bad, like something moldy, and the parking lot smelled like something worse. Had to climb 3 flights of narrow, rickety stairs to get to my room (with all snowboard gear and luggage). I prepaid the whole week but left two days early because the hotel was nasty and was not offered any refund. I had to disinfect everything upon returning home for fear of bedbugs.

Great for couples

We came in at night so we didn't know just HOW CLOSE it was to the slopes until we walked out the door the next morning and walked across the parking lot right into Canyon Lodge. Outdoor hot tub has a beautiful view of the mountain.

"Old School European Ski Lodge"

Easy access to outdoor activities with an authentic German restaurant and old world charm make this inn a great choice for the traveler that wants a unique mountain resort experience. For those accustomed to the generic cookie-cutter hotels, this small layout might be too cozy. However, once inside the room it's very similar to many common hotels. With only around two dozen rooms or so, you can imagine that loud partying and late-night activity are frowned upon. So keep that in mind. It's a great place for couples and/or retirees that won't be raising hell. For the younger crowd, I would try to find a condo or some other place where you can cut loose. Overall, I would strongly recommend Austria Hof for a relaxing getaway by Mammoth Mountain.

Go check out the National Monument called "The Devil's Postpile". Previously unknown to me, this is a really cool geological phenomenon.

We enjoyed our stay

We showed up really late. It was cold and windy. The office was closed, but there was the key at the window waiting for us. We enjoyed our stay. The hotel is small but very cozy. Clean room. Perfect location for ski, right next to Canyon Lodge, although we didn't stay here during ski season. Will definitely be thinking about this hotel when we come to Mammoth for skiing.
