Chic look, terrible service
Yes, the decor is hip and the rooftop bar is fun if you're into that scene. BUT the service is by far the worst I've experienced at any hotel. No one helped us with our bags as we lugged them from the parking lot through crowds of drunk bar goers to the front desk to check in. There was no courtesy parking during the checkin as in most hotels. Housekeeping was problematic every day. One day they did not come at all. On the other days, soaps, towels and glasses were never replaced. When these items were requested, they took hours to come and staff were unapologetic. Still, the hotel is right near the metro, has free wifi, and has it's own club scene which is nice.

Hotel was clean and staff was nice. Standard is anything but standard. Television only worked about 50% of the time and the breakfast I ordered never showed up.

The Standard
I stayed at The Standard Downtown LA on the last day of our trip out to LA. We were within walking distance (2 to 3 blocks) of a grocery store, coffee shop, LA Live, and the freeway was very easy to get to by car. The staff was nice and the rooms were small but comfortable enough for 2 people. The hotel lobby and restaurant were serviceable and I would definitely visit the rooftop bar for a drink if I'm in the area again. I was disappointed with 2 of the amenities in the rooms.... 1. the TV stand was too low to the ground and so it was uncomfortable watching the TV from the bed. 2. internet was free but the wireless connection from the room was very bad so I could not get any work done during my stay. But overall, considering the price and the location (downtown LA not Hollywood, Bev Hills, or Santa Monica), I would definitely consider staying there again.

Nightclub in my room
I hate that they had a "bouncer" to get into the room elevators. Everyone had to check in to get into my room. Sometimes I had to go down and get them. What's the point of getting a large room if you can't have people in it. It was like getting into a night club, it was ridiculous. The rooms are cool looking and modern, but that kinda dampered my night.

Night life yes, comfort NO!
I've been there several times with coworkers for Happy Hour on their rooftop bar which is fun and has an awesome view of Los Angeles, so I thought it would be a fabulous place to stay...NOT SO!!!! THE ROOMS ARE INCREDIBLY UNCOMFORTABLE AND DISGUSTING! It seems like the hotel was going for a contemporary look which was compromised of inexpensive nouveau furniture and the bed mattress was 6 inches off the floor on a mattress box. You may as well sleep on the ground. It also seemed quite disgusting that the sheets and comforter were tucked under the mattress and landed on top of the box where people can step on since the box extends beyond the width of the mattress. The bathroom had its issues as well. The bathroom looked like a gym locker room that hadn't been cleaned and had no room for my toiletries. I felt like I needed to have my shoes on the entire time. The faucet water smelled like a sewer and the scent from complimentary bar soap made me nauseous. Don't bother getting room service here either because the food was not very tasty.

Modern Design lacking Modern Convenience
Location is close to everything downtown and very convenient to the 7th Street Metro Station subway. For the price, I would have expected at least a coffee pot in the room and a pillow that didn't deflate. Also, I booked a king-bed room since that was all that was availalbe, but what I didn't know was that two entire walls of the bathroom were glass! I was traveling with my mother so we had to take turns leaving the room so that the other could shower. The boiler broke on the first day so we were both left to take a cold shower. When we called the Front Desk, they did comp 2 of our room service meals, but only did so upon request. The hotel is hip and cool.. the design is interesting and very European, but in trying to be different, it just lacked too many "standards" of hotel travel in the U.S. I would not go back unless significant improvements were made or the price dropped way down.

Short walk from hotel
Take the 7th Street Metro! It's only $1.50 one-way and it will take you straight to Hollywood. Skip the Hollywood/Vine stop and go right to Hollywood/Hillside, especially if you're traveling with children.

Snotty Staff
I've stayed here many times. All too often, there are a number of people on the staff that are too snotty and elitist. And they have a bunch of rules, like you can't take your backpack to the pool. The location and the patrons are cool. The staff is composed of jerks. Stay at your own risk.

Security RUINED my whole trip!
When we got there the Valet was nice...when we got to the front desk the hotel staff ruined the whole 2 minute experience so far by their rudeness and unprofessional actions. not one time do they look at you nor answer your question untill you ask atleast twice.... i ignored that and me n my friend both checlked in along with my other friend checking in to his room... we had 3 rooms there oh and they messed up on my room too.... right before we were going to the club, the Female security/lady that gives wrist bands was completely rude and started yelling so we were rude back and she basically refused to let the birthday person up to the rooftop along with his 3 friends. BUT, we had given them business of over 30 people already paid and waiting for us upstairs! so we talked to the manager and yet, he was completely unprofessional and rude....he would videotape us when we spoke our minds and not record himself when he is cursing or being completely unprofessional/"tough"....he did not allow us up and or nor ANYTHING! so the birthday boy spent it in his room and the 30 plus people waited for him for nothing upstairs! alll because of the UNPROFESSIONAL STAFF! I would love a refund for everything and am gunna take this a lot further!

Why stay here?
Honestly I was shocked and appalled at the rooms at the Standard. The hotel rooms are akin to what I would imagine staying in a Motel 6 would be like. They have a mattress on a platform--no real comfortable bed with an army blanket on top no comforter. The room is extremely sparse with cheap plastic chair and table. The shower is completely see through so if you are a family or staying with friends you probably do not want someone watching or in the room while you take a shower. Privacy anyone? The pool area is cool but the lounge chairs are ridiculously uncomfortable. I would NEVER stay at the Standard again and I highly highly caution you from staying there. The only thing the Standard is worth is the party at night. Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else and party there.

Nice Guy tells all
Lowering The Standard
Having stayed in hotels in 36 countries, I would say that I am a world traveler. With that said, you can take it from me that this is not where you want to stay. An example would be coming back to the room after a lunch appointment and finding that the 1 glass that was left for me had a huge crack in it. I didnt complain, but instead used the glass because I was in a hurry to make a few calls before I had my next appointment. The next day when I arrived back in the room, the bed was made, but the glass was still sitting where I had left it, and there were no towels. That was what it was- I didnt complain. However, when a friend who lives in LA came to the hotel to visit, the worst experience of my travels was about to happen. My friend brought homemade ice cream, but didnt bring any spoons. So, rather than calling House Keeping for a couple of spoons, I went down to the Front Desk. I waited there for close to 45 minutes while one person after another was helped. Everyone who came to that desk AFTER me was helped, but the Front Desk person would not help me, but kept looking at me to make sure I caught on that he was aware that I was there, but he wasnt going to help me. I spoke with the Manager the next day about this, and was informed "No, he wouldnt do that. He is a great guy." Well he did do that. He deliberately insulted me, and for no reason at all- I was dressed well, had my room key in hand, and was all smiles talking to my friend while we waited. Thus I must delcare that he wasnt helping me because I am white, or because I am gay, or because my friend there with me is Hispanic. Either way, there is no excuse for it. We all have our bad days, but that doesnt make it ok to be just down right rude to people. Therefore, I am going to tell it like it is- no more nice guy for them- As far as ammenities, there is a tacky gym in the middle of the building- thus, no windows, but it has the nicest wood paneling from the 60's if you care to workout in a wood box. At check in, the staff is very proud to inform you that you get 2 passes to the the roof top deck every night- Which I found that is when it becomes a hip hop club that brings in people that you will eventually see on the evening news. The club is hoppin all night, but dont worry if you cant make it up to the deck, you can hear the music and the people all the way down to your room- ALL NIGHT. I could continue with the horrors of my stay here, but will leave it at this: Dont lower yourself to their "Standard"
