A good place to stay

The location was great, even if 1.5 miles from the nearest Metro rail stop. It is within walking distance of Paramount and Hollywood Forever, the final resting place of such luminaries as CB DeMille, Marion Davies, Clifton Webb, the Fairbanks, father and son, and Rudolf Valentino, among many others famous in the past. The hotel itself has some issues. The elevator does not work (43 steps to the top floor), and it has not been redecorated for some time. The lobby is ornate, to say the least, but this is the only space in the hotel that is much decorated. The photographs in the hallways are interesting.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

There were three very nice restaurants within a block of the hotel. The Oxacan restaurant across Wilton served large cheap portions. The Columbian restaurant on Melrose toward Western also served large cheap portions. The staff was very friendly, too. The Italian restaurant just beyond the Oxacan restaurant was more expensive, but it had fine service and delicious food which made it worth the expense

On arrival the service and security

On arrival the service and security check were rather poor. We didn't get the non-smoking room we booked for at first, however everything was rectified after we spoke to the owner from the 2nd day onwards. We would reccommand the hotel to anyone if location is the most important factor for their stay because most of the tourist attractions are within half to an hour drive.

Not what i thought but ok

Well my wife was uncomfortable with the size of the room and the bathroom, but as i told her the hotel was build in the 1920's. We (Blacks) wasn't even aloud it it at that time. That's how old it was. But to be so old it was worth it, and i enjoyed my Hollywood sign view. I would go back if i could.

Not too bad for the price

The hotel was pretty alright the price with free parking. Amenities were lacking in the area with only 2 restaurants next street. The white guy who checked us in needs to go for a proper receptionist course (no other receptionist in the world will throw pens and room keys on the counter at his guests!). He was not rude to us when he talked to us, but his mannerism was outright rude. However, the other guy who checked us out the next day was much friendly. There's no lift in the building.

Good for price

We were in and out in one day. Stopped to see the sights during an extended weekend wedding in California. It was fine for a short stay. There are not many outlets in room for recharging a phone or computer, but for the location and price this hotel was just fine.

Historic Hollywood Hotel

Pros: 1. Location. It's a quick jaunt to downtown Hollywood. Not far at all. 2. Decor. If you like a historic silver screen ambience, this is your place. Cons: 1. Going Up? There is no elevator. So, pack light, or be prepared to haul heavy suitcases up the historic steps. There are pictures of Marilyn, Humphrey, and Ava on the way if you happen to take a break during your ascent. 2. Aroma. There was a persistent, "pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey" can't quite identify it, type of scent that was a guest at the hotel, too. Not unbearable, but present. Don't take this as a knock to the HHH, it is great if you desire a spot clean and safe nearby downtown.

Entertainment tip: Short drive from hotel

Jimmy Kimmel shows each weeknight on Hollywood Blvd. Whether you're a fan or not, it's a fun experience. Tickets are free, just find a rep and ask them about it circa 3-4pm. If you're chosen as the "Most Valuable Fan," you might find yourself with $100 credit to fill your gas tank with.
