smelly but okay

The hotel is not in the best area of town, but it's walkable to some interesting things. Our room had a permanent funky smell to it, and it was small. The window unit air conditioner was blocked by the window curtain, and it was too weak to keep the room cold anyway. Don't expect amenities like room service, a phone in your room, or an ice machine. We were surprised that there was a coffee machine (we didn't try it) and a refrigerator. There was also a television with basic cable, but no premium channels, and no pay-per-view options. There was free parking and free wireless internet, and the rooms were quiet. The staff was very nice too, especially on the last night when our room keys stopped working. (They were demagnetized, somehow.) Basically, this was better than a hostel, about the quality of a bad motel, and definitely worse than a nice hotel.

Delivered what was spected

The building is really impressive and beatifull and my overall experience was OK. The Hollywood Historic Hotel is a bit old, but the room was clean and confortable enough for a short 2-day stay. As LA is a place that demands a car, free parking is a diferentiatior.

Friends getaway

The hotel looks much better from the outside than inside. It's very old and the elevator was out of service but the room was clean and the staff was helpful most of the time. Overall, our stay was pleasant - we got what we paid for. The location is not the best: far from the Metro and no restaurants around to eat.

central location yet not actually near anything

Finding a clean, decent budget hotel in LA is becoming more difficult. The Hollywood Historic Hotel has a few things going for it: it's an interesting building, centrally located, and has plenty of off-street parking. But the stretch of Melrose it's on is completely dead. It's not walking-distance to anything remotely interesting, and if you want to go out in the evening to grab a bite, your strolling options are very limited. It is an older building with thin single-pane windows so there's a lot of street noise, even on the third floor, and the AC makes a racket. I'm accustomed to sleeping with earplugs so that wasn't a deal-killer for me. The room was clean and basic, but the king bed was very hard and uncomfortable, and they use flat sheets which continually get undone. The bed alone is reason enough for me never to return.

Good Location but Noisy

I must admit it is in a good location and great value but it needs some updates in the rooms which can still make it a historic hotel. There are no phones lol. The windows are original and very noisy u can here everything through them. I had an end unit on the 2nd floor on the melrose ave side and it was the noisiest room i have ever stayed in. You can hear traffic at all hours but one plus is you can see the HOLLYWOOD sign perfectly from that room. All in all a great value and needs some updates. Elevator does not work and by previous reviews it has been inoperable for years it seems.

Great Value but you must be realistic!

The hotel was a perfect example of getting what you paid for...I needed an expensive one night hotel before starting my "real" trip the next day. This hotel was convenient and very clean. They even upgraded my room to a suite. Keep in mind the area is a little rough...no elevator so you drag your baggage and its old and not fancy. If you want a clean place to stay with no frills then this is a great place...one night was fine but wouldnt want to spend a vac there....very nice people though! If affordability is your priority then go for it!

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Next door is a cafe that is awesome...great food...wonderful people and they own the hair salon adjoining it. He is a world renowned hair stylist from Miami. Make sure to stop there if you stay at the hotel....

Not for light sleepers

It's an old building with little sound insulation. There's a lot of road noise. My room didn't have a phone, they have an 800 number to call the front desk instead. Not a great neighborhood (none in Hollywood are). Service could have been a little friendlier. None of that really bothered me. It's good enough if you are looking to save a few bucks.

good value

I booked the hotel cause the location and the free parking and internet. Room is clean, but I don't like the hard wood floor very much. And my room is near the street so it's bit noisy in the morning. Nothing else to complain. overall very good.

Nice hotel

Stayed here for one night. This is a simple hotel that has lots of cool picts of LA in the corridors' walls. Nothing spectacular, but a nice place to stay. No major issues.

Your not staying here to lounge at the hotel.

We had a great time here. We are also the type of travelers that are on the go and just need a safe place to sleep and keep our stuff. There are no telephones in the rooms and the curtains did not block out any light in the morning. But it was clean, the staff very nice and accommodating. You do need a car if you stay here but parking is free and seemed safe.

The Italian restaurant Osteria La Buca was a great dinner experience and Nue Café was great for breakfast.
