Beachfront, but noisy

Noise from PCH , the late night business across the street, and early morning trash pickup made leaving windows open for the sound of the ocean not an option. However, very convenient for walking and beach access.

Midweek getaway

Hotel Laguna is a quaint old hotel which was established in Laguna Beach decades ago. The pluses are that it is right in the middle of town, close to the Pagent of the Arts Festival, and on the ocean with a small private beach. No air conditioning required unless you want to spend the day in your room. It has had some current upgrading and the restaurants serve good food, indoors and out overlooking the Pacific. The minuses are that the public hallways seem to be rather rundown and need more cleaning and paint. Do not accept a "Village View" room as they are right on the main drag with car fumes that come into the room. The next step up is the "Garden View" which has some ocean view, and the "Ocean View". By comparison in Laguna it is reasonably priced but not luxurious. I chose it for location and to be on the ocean.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Scandia bakery and deli is in the town shopping area and serves excellet hot and cold food and has an exttensive bakery and reasonable prices. I go to Laguna every other year for the Pagent of the Masters live show in the oiutdoor amphetheater-see website. It has been produced for 75 years and is very entertaining. There is an artisans show on the grounds with exellent and upscale work. There is also the Sawdust Festival, down the road a piece, which is more of a craft show but with some good glassware, paintings, etc.

Historic beach front

The best: A reserved beach is just steps away . Hotel staff very friendly; restuarant had great food. Downside: Very noisy! Traffic and restuarant noise until 2am. Street cleaners and delivery trucks started about 5 am, so listening to ocean was out. No air conditioning, but there is a ceiling fan. Hotel is historic, so there are items that seem old (warped doors, hallway noise, small elevator). The common areas have been redone and have charm.

Entertainment tip: Short drive from hotel

Stop by the Pacific Marine Mammal Center on at 20612 Laguna Canyon Rd (Hwy 133). It is free. Donations accepted. The sea lions and seals were playful. Volunteers eager to answer questions. This is well worth the stop and terrific for the kids.

Great staff, not so great room

We stayed at this hotel for our honeymoon. They have a very friendly staff and the building and landscaping are beautiful. The only problem is the room we stayed in wasn't very nice. The bed linens, bathroom, and decor could use a major upgrade. It was a sacrifice we were willing to make for such a great price and location, but wouldn't stay here again on a "romantic" trip.

Olimendis is the best Mexican food I've ever had! It's just a short walk up the hill on the PCH.

Old unrefurbished rooms

The location is unbeatable. The restaurants are first class. Claus was excellent. However, once you get past the beach and lobby, the rooms are very uncomfortable. Our room was smelly, the bathroom, entrance doors and closets were warped. The bathroom has the original fixtures and lack of hot water. We will not return unless there is a major renovation. The hotel was inexpensive, but you get what you paid for.

Great Hotel

The hotel was great. It had a really great atmosphere. The restaurants were nice and the beach and beach services were great. The hotel is really in the middle of everything, which makes it easy to see everything that Laguna Beach has to offer. If I ever return to the area I will definitely stay in this hotel again.

Hotel Laguna

Lovely old hotel with an interesting history. My room overlooked the ocean and the view was magnificent. Rooms were quite, except for the sound of the waves, but that could be because no one occupied the rooms next to mine. Carpet in the hotel is old and musty and needs to be replaced. Breakfast is too meager and might want to provide bigger plates or a tray so guests can carry items back to the room given that there was no table to sit down and eat. Front desk staff were very helpful. The beach front staff were rude, non-inclusive and inattentive and need some human relations training. Very centrally located in town and everything was walking distance. Parking facilities were tight but adequate. Overall I had a very lovely vacation.
