Great location!

Really comfortable stay at Empress. Great staff, very friendly and personable. Hotel room is average with nothing special but you can't beat the location! It's just 2-3 blocks from the beach and very central to downtown la jolla with lots to do and see. loved it. only annoying part is paying for valet parking...but there aren't many other options around there.

The staff is very nice and they try to do their best to make you feel good. The location is good to go to the beach . Not a lot of bars around and most restaurants close by 11.

Quick weekend getaway

I stayed here for a night & absolutely loved how close it was to the beach, the shopping area, & all the great food places in La Jolla. I was surprised that there was no pool, I guess I'm just use to hotels having pools. My cousin & I walked around Prospect Ave where all the shopping was, went down to the beach, etc. It was perfect for a short weekend getaway.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

The Cottage is within walking distance, less than 500 feet away from The Empress. That place has great brunch! The wait is usually pretty long so get there early. Or Cody's on Girard is another great option. That's also within walking distance.

Perfect for La Jolla

The staff is very friendly. The room is both very clean and very comfortable. From cookies and apples at the front desk to maps for getting around town, the staff couldn't have been more helpful. The hotel is nice and quiet, so I got two good nights of sleep. I would definitely stay here again.

Mixed feelings

Things started off badly because the room "promised" two weeks earlier was a deluxe King, but the room actually reserved was a handicapped queen. After a half hour of discussion with the hotel desk and booking agency customer service we settled on taking a standard queen - same price. The hotel insisted that the reservation came thru as a handicapped queen; the booking agency insisted that the hotel was responsible for the change. At 4PM there were no other attractive alternatives, so we settled. Aside from the obvious problem, the room. hotel and staff were fine. We were offered free valet parking (normally $10) as compensation. The front desk staff were very helpful during our stay.
