What can you expect from Fortuna's independent hotel? You can expect a small scale hotel that left the corporate, franchise environment to offer an experience with a proud sense of place. You can expect a hotel that is evolving as we make decisions that are aligned with Humboldt County's rich heritage and history. You can expect a little of the "un-expected". Located off US 101 in an area with traveler services, The Redwood seeks to be your one-of-a-kind choice amongst the small grouping of franchise hotels, restaurants, and gas stations in Fortuna. Steps from this small grouping of businesses are the final miles of Eel River, before it reaches the Pacific. Our central location serves as the ideal base camp to visit the many state parks and enjoy other outdoor activities in Humboldt County. The Humboldt County experience continues when you arrive at The Redwood. Murals in the lobby, pool area and stairwells offer insight into Humboldt's topography, ancient forests, lumber camps and the daily life of the Native American Weott tribe. A vintage kayak, rods and reels, and Jeff's grandfather's flies on display give a nod to the Eel River only 200 feet behind the hotel. You can follow it along the levy trail for a few miles, also known as the Riverwalk. A cowhide print area rug at the entrance reminds us of the local dairies and the cows found grazing nearby. The lobby wainscot is reclaimed redwood brought from a dismantled water tower just north of Arcata, a reference to the area's lumber industry and history. Our connection to the area also guides the decisions we make. It also gives direction to our upgraded breakfast at the Canteen. There, you will find both Lumberjack and Tree Hugger frittatas (meat and vegetarian options), local jams and honey and fresh, seasonal fruit. In the afternoons you may even find a plate of brownies at the desk, a wink to another famous Humboldt industry. But the heart of hospitality is not the amenities, it is the service. As your independent hotel choice in Fortuna we strive to give "boutique hotel" service and exceptional hospitality. Because we are small and independent, changes will continue to improve the guest experience. The guest is the reason we are here, but the redwoods, rivers and general area are the reasons you, the guest, are here. With this in mind, we seek to offer you a strong sense of place. That sense of place is the Giant Redwoods of Humboldt County. Welcome!

a nice find amidst a sea of boring chain motels

So nice to not to stay at chain, with modern & clean rooms. The breakfast was homemade and unique, the lobby had a great rustic flair and so did the room and artwork.

Nice, but needs something more...

It's a very nice place, on the outside. The staff was wonderful. The main lobby and outside look wonderful. However, once we entered the room it was much like an old motel. The mattress needed to be changed. It was clearly old. Did not feel good after a very long drive. The sheets were stiff and harsh as well. A new mattress and some nicer linens and the room would be wonderful. For that value, I would prefer a better bed. I would recommend the hotel to anyone going there.

Quiet spot for weary travelers

Booked a room here at the last minute while traveling with our dogs. The staff was incredibly friendly, the room was HUGE and comfy, and there are plenty of grassy areas for walking the dog. Will definitely stay here again!

A good value, and they clearly try hard to please

We stayed two nights over a holiday weekend during a winter birding trip. We chose this motel partly because it is pet-friendly, which it certainly is. The staff is friendly and eager to help. The room was clean and comfortable, and the complimentary breakfast was fine, including some very different kinds of items like tiny "lumberjack" tarts and scones.Free newspapers, a nice indoor pool, interesting decor, lots of small touches that show effort. The only flaw was that it was something of a hike from car to room.

Best hotel in the row

This hotel is part of the "hotel row" --there are several hotels in the area, and being from around there, I have tried them all. For what I paid, this is by far the cleanest, has the best continental breakfast (cinnamon rolls and bacon--AWESOME), and the nicest staff out of all of them. I'm just going to book here next time I stay, no further shopping around needed.

Great Place to Stay

I stopped here for a night on my way to L.A. It was convenient, comfortable, and clean. The price for the stay really was a deal for this hotel. I typically don't see the price for a Holiday Inn Express less than $100. The associate when I arrived was friendly and helpful.

Dining tip: Short drive from hotel

All the quick places to pick up a bite to eat are on the other side of hwy 101; otherwise choices directly beside the hotel are very limited.
