Del Mar Gem
L'Auberge has a great staff and excellent location. The rooms remind one of being in a chalet and not really a hotel. You do have to be careful about hidden costs and their movie system is lodge.net which is a great service but a little pricey.

Gorgeous hotel!
Beautiful hotel! Short walk to the beach and tons of restaurants. The room was amazing with a fireplace, huge shower, private balcony and many personal touches. Only downside is the outside bar/restaurant (Which has a firepit and waterfall) closes fairly early and the bar in the lobby gets pretty crowded. Staff was polite and very accommodating.

Nice, boutique hotel, a hike from SD
This is a nice property with a bit of a boutique feel to it. Rooms are smallish but nicely decorated and staff/service was pretty good. One word of warning though, although this is in the town of Del Mar, you are still a good 20 minute drive from downtown San Diego. In addition you have to cross a (busy) railway line and road to get to the beach. After staying at Surf and Sea in Laguna Beach and the Oceana in Santa Monica, it was hard not to feel a little let down by this hotel. If you a looking for a boutique-style property that is in the San Diego region but out of the way, this may be for you, but for us we would have preferred either a hotel right in town or something right on the beach.

San Diego zoo really has to be one of the best in the world and well worth a visit. Maritime museum in San Diego was also really good fun (and great value at the price).

Special Birthday Retreat
Lovely, upscale hotel. Nice ambience. Good service. Outdoor dining (ate brunch)overlooking pool which overlooks the ocean -- if the weather were balmy, you'd think you were in Hawaii. Once park, no need for car. Walk every where. Easy access to the beach & restaurants on the beach (although you do have to cross the RR tracks).

Great, but watch out for the hidden $$$
The resort was great, I went with my husband for our anniversarry. Since the rates were very high, I didn't think I was going to be charged for anything else but for food or room service... but because there is no self parking the hotel charges you $25 a day for valet parking and $ 12 a day for turndown service. I thought the turndown service charge was rediculous! I have been in many 5 star hotels, and I have never seen such a thing. There was no reference that about this when I made the reservation, I found out when I checked out. We got a massage appointment, which was great, the spa is quit new, so there are some logistic issues. The steam room wasn't ready, I had to wait because they forgot to turn it on. Another thing, is that they list "fitness center", but is not on premise, the hotel gives you a pass and you have to go to a gym in the village! Overall it was a good experience, yet this little charges should be told to guests or being listed in the prices!
