Cramped and Cranky Get-Away

Wonderful location but a miserable night's sleep. The size of the room was unbelievably small - like nothing I've experienced before - not even in Europe. The over-sized bed and 42" widescreen television monitor mounted on the wall facing the bed made this small room feel even smaller. This room (#21) begs not to have a television as an amenity. There was just enough space to walk around the bed. The closet was inadequate for two people. The bathroom was teenie tiny. The bathtub was one that does not allow you to straighten your legs out, even though it is plenty deep enough. The heat is old-fashioned; very noisy steam heat (!). The pipes banged so loudly and so long during our second night that my partner had to get dressed and go down to ask that something be done. What was done was the heat to our room had to be turned off. Maybe other rooms were nicer, but this particular room is not recommended - at least not for more than one person. Also, there was no refrigerator in-room as the website would lead you to believe is standard in each room.

Il Fornaio - served an excellent meal and diners who have not dined there before get special treats - imported bottled water, appetizers and a dessert. It was really nice.

Rustic, romantic, stunning, loved it

The room was stunning. It took our breath away. Felt like something out of the movies. No air conditioning could be a problem in the heat, but it was cool and we were quite comfortable. Attached restaurant could have been better and was very pricey. Locals appeared to be a bit snooty, but it was Carmel.

CHARM AND LOCATION

This is an older hotel in the heart of Carmel. As such, expect smaller rooms and thinner walls. That being said, the staff was candid about the drawbacks to the room we'd booked and helpful in suggesting a quieter alternative. Location could not be better, and its restaurant, Il Fornaio, is one of the top spots in town for atmosphere and people-watching.

Casanova. Over-priced, crowded, noisy, but great food, extensive wine list, and the ultimate Carmel dining spot.

Pine Inn, Carmel-by-the-Sea

Hotel is a historic property right on Ocean Ave in Carmel. It did have some modern conveniences - wireless, ironing board - but no coffee in the room. Really it's intended as a tourist hotel for recreation, and it performed admirably. Nice front desk, excellent restaurant in-house.

Casanova was excellent, but overpriced, especially the wine list. Il Fornaio was equally good and about half the cost.

Cute, Clean Hotel.

Hotel was very clean and the customer service was fantastic. Room was EXTREMELY small and we felt a bit cramped. Great location. Il Fornaio, the restaurant connected to the hotel, was very mediocre at best. Service there was pretty bad.

Old World Feel in the heart of Carmel.

Although somewhat expensive the Pine Inn offers a touch of Europe just minutes from the ocean. Located on the main strip of Carmel restaurants and shopping is right outside the door. We found the hotel's staff to be very friendly and helpful. Our room although small was beautifully decorated with European appointments. If you are tired of the cookie cutter hotel rooms you will love the continental feel of the Pine Inn.

excellent value

A bit on the quaint side. Super location. Excellent and reasonably priced on site Italian restaurant and bar. No work out facility, though. I could not get wi fi to work, but that may have been me not the system. Had to call room service for ice, but no big deal. Parking lot easy to access.

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

Pacific three blocks. Pebble Beach golf course 1/2 mile. Recommend driving to Big Sur, about an hour's drive. Spectacular scenery. Drove to Monterrey Wharf (15 minutes) for a three hour whale watching trip. $40 per person. Well worth it. Restuarant in hotel excellent and reasonably priced.
