21st anniversary

First, very easy and quick using website .the hotel itself was amazing. In Berkeley, CA we live 30 miles from the site and probably have paseed this place hundreds of times and did not realize the beauty of the hotel. The architecture of the hotel is amazing. We strongly recommend this hotel. A diamond in the rough

great place for a show

perfect place to stay to see a show at the greek. right in the middle of downtown berkeley. remember to bring suits for swimming...the indoor pool is one of a kind, truly a gem. great staff, wonderful building and room. doesn't get any better than this historic building. its nice to stay at a place with no tv's. so much more relaxing. makes you take the time to enjoy where you are and who you are with. breakfast is wonderful. will definitely be staying here again.

Too much pride, too little substance

For $175 per night, I would expect a writing desk or at least a TV - and there was neither. The windows don't fully close - ok in June, probably not so good in January. There is a load construction site next to the hotel, they start cutting metal beams at 7AM - well before the end of the hotel's quiet time (11-9). The bathroom has the most antiquated hardware I've ever seen: separate cold and hot faucets, semi-clogged sink. The breakfast was totally unimpressive - but free (but I've been billed for $0!).

great facility and location. staff not up to par.

You cant beat the location in downtown Berkeley and walking distance to UCB, shops and restaurants. The facility is beautiful and historic, full of detail, character and several quiet places to read. The pool s gorgeous and you will need a bathing cap to use it. Since it is an old building be prepared for noisy water heaters in room. Being downtown you may be awakened by the homeless rummaging through trash and recyclables at 4am. Otherwise very quiet. The staff did not seem to be engaged to provide the level of service or relay information about events for guests. At happy hour the bartender was focused on training someone instead of acknowledging us as paying guests and making us the priority. In addition they did not offer to put the tab on the room bill as opposed to cash bar. The front desk were not helpful providing parking options. The breakfast staff were inattentive and did not make sure everything was out in a timely way. I felt the staff should be comparable in the service to the price of the room/stay.

Visiting son at Cal

Staff was helpful; location handy to campus, shopping, restaurants. Not far from BART station. For those who care, no t.v. in the room. Charming building with lots of pleasant spots for reading, chatting, relaxing. Pretty good value.
