if SF hotels are full this is a good option

Great hotel next to BART station to commute to San Fran. Saves paying outrageous SF hotel prices for less quality.

Always a Great Stay!

We have stayed at this hotel twice and our son stayed there once. It is always a great stay! The rooms are very nicely furnished, the beds very comfortable. I feel safe there! The staff is very accommodating! I have an allergy to down, so I requested a replacement for the down comforter on the bed and got one immediately! It is a little more expensive than other hotels in the area, but worth every penny!

Stopping at the Shattuck

I checked in late (10:30PM) after a long trip from the East Coast. The Shattuck is a renovated historic hotel with a funky charm. The desk clerk, Ralph, was friendly; made sure that I was informed about a impending short term shut off of H2O by city workers (never noticed the brief shut down) and gave me bottles of drinking water. He also personally delivered a sandwich to me after the restaurant closed, because I had told him how tired and hungry I was after my long (and delayed) trip. Nice place; spectacular service.

Euro-historic hotel

The Shattuck is a lovely euro-style hotel in an historic building. The ceilings are high, beds comfortable. The bar and restaurant are an elegant and popular meeting place. My only complaint is that I got a room next to the elevator, which started dinging at 6:30am. So make sure you ask for something away from the elevator. They don't have parking, but there's a convenient public lot across the street. You can walk to campus, and it's right at the BART station.

Ideal location and upscale atmosphere

The staff was courteous and efficient. The room was nicely appointed. Style was comfortable with a touch of elegance. Nice Keurig in the room, but no mini-refrigerator. Need liquid creamer rather than powder to match the coffee quality. Great free wifi access. Location is excellent with BART station nearby and many shops and restaurants to try. UC Berkeley campus is walking distance.

Art Deco Warmth

I went to Berkeley for a UC reunion and picked the Shattuck Plaza for its location. It was the perfect choice. It has a BART (subway) station right around the corner - I took one train to get to the heart of San Francisco for a day of touring The City. Outside the same station is a stop for the UC campus shuttle that will take you anywhere on campus for $1. The hotel itself was very attractively outfitted in Art Deco style. The rooms and beds are comfortable, the staff very friendly and extremely helpful, the hotel has a small but adequate workout room, the area has a great selection of good restaurants, and there is a reasonably-priced garage right across the street for parking. I couldn't have been happier with my choice!

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

As soon as you make your hotel reservation, make a reservation at the famed Chez Panisse, a 15-minute walk from Hotel Shattuck Plaza. The main restaurant is expensive and almost impossible to get reservations for. But Chez Panisse now has an upstairs cafe that is more reasonable and more casual, but that serves the same types of fresh from local growers boutique food that the chef, Alice Walker, built her world-renowned reputation on. The menu varies depending on what is fresh and available at the time. I had a vegetable couscous dish with roasted squash, baby Brussel sprouts and broccoli leaves, and garbanzo beans with a glass of their house Zinfandel followed with a red-wine steamed pear tart - I was in heaven! Don't miss this experience!

Awesome Stay

Booked a room for a quick getaway for my girlfriend's birthday. When we told the concierge why we were there they upgraded us to a suite for free! The hotel itself is very old, but they did a great job of giving the rooms a modern feel. Overall, the place is a very classy establishment, perfect for a romantic getaway.

Games of Berkeley is right across the street. It's a neat little shop that sells all kinds of board games, card games, and hobby type stuff. Definitely worth checking out if you enjoy that kind of thing.

Best in Berkeley

After a very disappointing experience at THE "name hotel" in Berkeley, CA some years ago, I found the Shattuck Plaza and have happily returned there every year at Thanksgiving and other occasions. The rooms are excellent (though I wish they'd chosen a less modern but more spacious bathroom washstand design) and the staff is uniformly accommodating.

Awesome!

The hotel is located close to everything and the room was nicely remodeled. A little difficult to find street parking but there is public parking on the north and south sides of the hotel. Close to public transportation and the Univ of CA Berkeley. Great stay!

Parking is free on the street after 6pm but you have to move the car by 9am; as such, street parking may be a little difficult to find. Good luck!
