Not bad for the price

This hotel has been renovated sometime in the past few years. The rooms have updated interiors, nice bedding, a nice television, a digital thermostat, refrigerator, granite in the bathroom, and so on. The walls, however, are still a bit thin, as are the exterior windows. I was awoken at least once each night from doors closing in the hallway or, one night, from a freight train whistle. But to be fair, I am a relatively light sleeper. Also, the fitness room was pretty pathetic. There was a stationary bike, tread mill, Nautilus and elliptical machine. The stationary bike was broken. The Nautilus was not bad, but the quality of the elliptical machine and treadmill were low-end consumer grade at best. Both felt very flimsy and the elliptical machine was uncomfortable to use. Definitely not the quality you'd expect to find in a gym, but rather in someone's garage. The staff was very courteous, the cleaning service was excellent, and the free breakfast was much better than expected. This is located downtown, which as I understand has undergone some gentrification in recent years. However, there were still some interesting characters walking around, one time a homeless man walking down the street yelling obscenities, another time a clearly intoxicated gentleman asking for spare change. While this place clearly wasn't the Carlyle, it was better than expected for the location and price. I was a bit nervous booking this hotel after reading some of the reviews from a few years ago, but my stay here was pleasant and I would recommend the hotel to a colleague if they were looking for a downtown location at an affordable rate.

Stay at Best Western Hill House, Bakersfield

We were very pleased with the hotel and staff. Room was clean and seemed new. The hotel could use better signage. You can only see the sign when traveling west on Truxton. You can't see the sign if you are traveling on Truxton from the East. Pool furniture was old and falling apart.

Great Value!

My sister and I had to attend a Mary Kay Cosmetics conference. We were pleasantly surprised with the Best Western Plus Hill House. The rooms were more than we expected for the price and loved the fact staff had given us plenty of towels. Also this location is within walking distance to the Mexicali Mexican Restaurant which was excellent. It is right across the street from the Rabobank Convention Center very convenient. Also very quiet so we had a good nights sleep before our early morning convention.

Mexicali Mexican Restaurant is sooo cute, quaint little bar, and great Mexican food! Very popular on a Friday night so there is a little wait.
