Golfing masterpiece overlooking Santa Cruz River Valley

Esplendor Resort, 45 minutes south of Tucson, overlooks the lush green Santa Cruz River Valley, surrounded by mountains and the Sonoran Desert. Each room offers its own private patio or balcony with panoramic views of the mountains, valley, desert, and spectacular Arizona sunsets. Inside, the restrained southwestern decor and gracious service make this a premiere destination for business or leisure. The resort features a championship golf course, tennis, restaurants, and a pool.

Highlights

  • Robert Trent Jones-designed golf course
  • Free Wi-Fi access
  • Southwestern vistas in every direction
  • Close to Mexican border

Rooms

Rooms include king or double beds, patio or balcony, in-room coffeemaker, cable television, refrigerator, work and sitting area, hairdryer, and iron with ironing board.

Features

The resort offers a true getaway in southwestern luxury. Leather furniture and Indian patterned fabrics, beamed ceilings, adobe walls, and wrought-iron chandeliers give the hotel's rooms and public spaces the feeling of a gracious desert hacienda.

Guests dine on dishes such as tequila ceviche or cheese-stuffed filet mignon at the San Cayetano Restaurant or more casual fare at Santa Rita Grill. The Saloon provides patrons with a place to knock back a few shots of Old West nostalgia and enjoy lighter fare and specialty margaritas.

Recreational offerings include horseback riding, tennis day or night on lighted courts, world-class golf on an 18-hole Robert Trent Jones championship course, and a relaxing pool.

Pleasant Resort Amenities

The room was larger than some, although there was inadequate light at night for reading. Had an in-room refrigerator, which I like while traveling, but our particular fridge never really got cold enough to keep beverages at a proper temperature. Furnishings and layout of the room were nice but we also had a problem in that the bathtub drain would not hold so on nights when we might have liked to soak and relax, we were only able to use the shower. Pleasant patio that looked out over the courtyard, although it was too cold in mid-February to avail ourselves of it. If I were to travel to this area again, I would return to this resort as it's relatively good value for what they charge.

Dining tip: Short drive from hotel

There's a lovely little nature trail (complete with road runners!) that will lead you down to a local restaurant that has great Mexican food--called La Placita 2.
