Disappointing visit

The location is away from everything so expect to be required to travel. The first disturbing thing is a note on the front door stating clothing was required throughout the resort. I really did not expect anything like this. Our first night, there was a sign at the restaurant stating it had been reserved by someone else. I guess I wasn't as important as them. This kinda ticked me off. The pool was dirty and had palm leaves in it for several days. When I finally saw someone cleaning it, I saw what I thought looked like a show taken out of one of the filters. Guess that was why it was dirty. Although we were one of at most 20 people at the resort, the maid service was spotty at best and I actually had to ask for it the last night we were there. They tried bribing me with a 7 dollar bottle of wine and comped us dinner. All in all, very disappointing for a resort which considers itself high class. Never did see any naked people but when I complained, I was told that the locals use it and that's why the sign was there. Not at all what I expected. I would pass on them and go somewhere else.

OK resort hotel

They advertise a wonderful heated pool, all year around, which was the main reason I booked the room, but when we arrived I found the pool ice cold and dirty. I was informed by the desk that the pipes broke back in January and they hadn't fixed it yet. They are claiming an big amenity that they do not in fact provide.

Best kept secret

I was completely impressed with the grounds, the staff, the room, and the breakfast. I have stayed many places in my travels, but the Esplendor Resort at Rio Rico is so very nice. It is a shame that the parking lot isn't full. You get MORE than your monies worth staying here.

Not good-Not bad...Just average

My husband and I wanted a very quiet, do-nothing vacation and this place perfectly fit the bill. There is nothing to do in this sleepy town and the closest town is 15 minutes away. The only activity in the resort is the pool so having a rental car is good so you can leave and explore. I tried to book a massage but the resort was "in between massage therapists" so I wasn't able to. The golf course is a drive (over the highway) so don't expect to walk it. It is not physically apart of the resort. A nice course though. The rooms were okay. I would certainly not call it a 4 star resort, more like a 3 star. They were clean and well kept, maybe needed a little updating. There was a fridge in our room and the front desk reheated leftovers for us. The food in the resort was terrible and expensive. My husband and I drove to Tubac and Nogales to eat. There is a nice restaurant in Rio Rico, next to the grocery store...pizza and pasta. The staff was incredibly friendly but also incredibly slow. We were not in a hurry so the slow service did not bother us. On more than one occassion we had to 'yoo-hoo' to get someone's attention. For something to do, we recommend driving 1.5 hours to Tombstone for the afternoon. Beautiful drive too. We had a very quiet and peaceful vacation but we will not be going back.

Esplendor Stay

Rooms are very clean, comfortable and quiet. Food is very good. Staff very friendly. They could use some new linens in the dining room and new sheets and towels, but not a biggie. Have stayed there 4 times over the last 10 years and have never been disappointed.

A weekend near the Mexico Border

Huge 179 room resort with countless buildings, attractive grounds, showing its age. Room was good size, clean, and adequately appointed. Service in the hotel and restaurant was enthusiastic but untrained. Restaurant food was barely edible. The chimichanga was flat and bland, the rice was cold, and the chicken salad tasteless (though the meager portion of chicken had been grilled at some time in the past). Internet service didn't work, though staff tried hard to correct it. The price was right, at about $60, (less than the chimi and chicken salad, after tip) and I would come here again, though it would be with a cooler of food, and without expectations that I'd be able to use the Internet. I think the problem with the kitchen and the eager but clumsy service is that the place is very big and very old but has too few customers to run a proper menu or adequately trained staff. Not their fault.
