You get what you pay for ...

There's no doubt the price and location of the hotel are great. Plus, the hotel's history is cool. But this is a good example of "you get what you pay for". The walls are VERY thin (you can hear normal-level conversations in adjacent rooms#, the shower plumbing is old #water temperature fluctuates drastically), and my mattress was awful. Plus, the front-desk staff when I checked in was rude. Thankfully when I checked out, the front desk agent was very helpful in getting me a taxi. If I had to do it all over again, I would pay more for a newer hotel and friendlier staff.

Super Small

I honestly couldn't belive how small the rooms were. It was somewhat nostalgic to see how people used to live, but after I got over that, I was in a 200 sq ft room with one bed, mirrors on one engire wall and a bathroom with no tub. The closet was almost as large as the main room, which was odd. The location was great, but I don't think we will be staying there again.

Did not meet my expectations

The San Carlos boasts an amazing image on their website, beautiful rooms emoting the historic and European atmosphere , amenities that included 3 restaurants and a unique retail store. Two out of the three restaurants were close, which also meant there was no on site bar. There was no breakfast available on Sat or Sun, as that restaurant is only open M-F. There was no cute boutique either. The pool is not 'rooftop' but third level patio, although nice, there was no service there either. Downtown Phoenix is very ghost town like, to have these services and amenities would offset that issue, but the San Carols offered very, very little.

Quaint

location was great, right in the middle of the city. It was a nice place but room was real small, barely fit two queen beds. Nice view but was dominated by much bigger buildings. Had some problems because the walls were paper thin, you can hear people on either side of you. If you'd like a step back into history this is the place to be. Valet parking only, parking was 20 dollars per day. Luckily we were there on the weekend and it was free on this day.

old worn but OK budget hotel near PCC

This is a historic property, about three blocks from the Phoenix convention center. It is pretty worn on the lobby level, the clientele is, to be kind, working class. On the room floors, the carpet is covering a rough and uneven floor surface but the corridors look clean and kind of appropriately old fashioned and generally OK. The rooms are similar, they are very small but adequate. The beds and bedding were simple, with enough pillows to start a pillow war. The Bedding was spotlessly clean, and over all, very pleasant but not the high thread count linens you might expect to see elsewhere for three times the room rate. WIFi is free and it worked fine. There was no thermostat to control the AC in my room, I was comfortable, but then I'm not all that demanding. There is a bar on the main floor and the WiFi works there also. I would use this hotel again for visits to the Phoenix convention center. There is cheap food at the Subway across the street. This is a good enough budget business trip hotel, if you keep your expectations under control, and just relax and enjoy the room rate.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Just relax and enjoy air conditioning, the WiFi, the extremely unpretentious hotel bar, and the room rate. Eat at Subway directly across the street for lunch and dinner and if it is summer, consider rescheduling your trip in the winter. This hotel is in Phoenix where it is 107 degrees outside in the daytime.

Great Location but Terrible Service

When we checked in the front desk the lady was rude and unhelpful. We asked her where we could park and she stated anywhere we liked. I asked her how much was the parking around the area and she stated she didn't know and did not offer valet. Then we got to the room and the room was Tiny. Another thing that was annoying was we could hear our neighbors through the ac vents and when someone was in the hall we could hear everything they were saying. The only reason we would stay there again is the location it was right down the street from the Comerica Theatre. We also loved the Bar next the hotel called Seamus Something; It was a cool irish pub. Oh and if you want to eat at the Cafe at the hotel it was called 202 Bistro the service was lousy and the food was overpriced. I recommend do not waste your time and money just go to subway across the street.

Old and loud

Location was good and if you like the charm of old places then it would be good, but not if you want any sort of modern conviences. Very old and small room, the bathroom was a closet and the buffet at the restuarant downstairs was unedible.

Issues

Room ten bucks less on Orb the day we arrived. The hotel had no record of our reservation, had to prove it by opening my email for the agent to read. Met some friends at the ghost lounge. An hour and forty five mins to get food. Hotel atmosphere and decor was fantastic.
