Great downtown locale, lots of history
The Hotel San Carlos is a very old hotel with a gorgeous bar and restaurant. The classic old furniture, chandeliers etc.are a real treat. There are fine city views,a great third story pool, and the proximity to downtown sporting and concert venues is the best. We actually walked over to the Dodge Theatre for a concert. I did not enjoy the small size of the rooms, the paper thin walls, and the ten dollar a day parking fee. Overall we had a good experience and felt the value was fair. The rooms named after Hollywood Stars who had visited was cool.

Downtown Hotel History
This hotel is an awesome place to stay; not only is is close to all of downtown festivities no matter what you are there for; business or pleasure. The light rail is 1/2 block away and very inexpensive to ride. Taxi service is expensive. We spent one whole evening in the hotel just reading all the history of the hotel and checking out all the beautiful historical pictures (with explanation captions of event). The hotel staff was wonderful and the queen bed accomadations were a real plus. They were extremely comfortable. I would definately stay @ the San Carlos again and again.

there was a great Irish Pub directly right next door that served excellent food. Also there was a subway and small deli directly right across the street from San Carlos for those who don't like trying new things and are used to subway.

Hotel San Carlos
Hotel is full of history. I would stay there again. Only issues were the shower was very small with no place to put shampoo etc. and the water in the shower when turned all the way to hot was just barely hot enough.

The Best Description is Funky
A thoroughly enjoyable small hotel. When you walk into the lobby you feel transported back to 1929. Rooms are certainly smaller than a Hilton or Hyatt's but they are not miniscule. There is a writing desk, a small corner table and chair and a very comfortable bed. I got a great night's sleep. It is right down town, within easy walking distance to the convention center, the baseball park and the basketball arena and a shopping center. There are several good restaurants around it, including a good Irish pub. The front desk was very helpful, especially since I made the reservation through [...] and [...] screwed up and did not forward the reservation to the hotel. [...], on the front desk, spent a lot of time getting hold of [...] to rectify the situation. For a downtown hotel, the price was more than reasonable. I would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone.

Right in the heart of Downtown Phoenix
We were in town to visit our son; we selected this hotel because it was just a short walk to the ASU Downtown Campus. The Light Rail was right near the hotel, very inexpensive and convenient. The hotel is old, but classic. We read other reviews about the noise, but that was not a problem during our Thurs-Sunday stay. There is minimal nightlife around the hotel; the Arizona Center is close by for movies, meals and window shopping; be aware… all the restaurants stop serving food at 10 pm.One minor problem at check-in, the hotel could not find our reservation from [...], thankfully, I brought along the e-mail confirmation. Not sure who was at fault~~~~~the hotel or [...], either way, it took us 30-40 minutes to check in, but it all got straightened out.

Great Location, Older Property
Was in PHX to attend Suns game downtown. Great hotel location, short 2 block walk to arena, nice restaurants along the way. The rooms were small, no a/c or heat adjustment (but temp was comfortable), 24" tv (non-HD, no remote), small bathroom. Overall, room was clean and quiet. Not much downtown street noise. For 1 or two guests, the double/double rooms are fine. 3 or 4 guests would feel cramped in one room.

A great place to stay in downtown Phx
Easy to get to from Phoenix's new light rail system, with convenient access to the heart of downtown. The price is also much more affordable than most hotels in the area. Rooms were comfortable and staff were friendly--my only complaint is that it was a tad noisy (bar/nightclub on first floor) on the weekends.

Money-saving tip:
Short walk from hotel
Phoenix's new light rail system is efficient and well-run, and much cheaper than other options ($1.75 flat rate). It stops near the hotel, goes directly to the airport, and also to the areas north of downtown.
