A lot better than the cookie cutters
Baseball Superfan Nov 11, 2009
Even though the location is in Medical district of Phoenix, the Clarendon Hotel is a hidden gem that everyone should ... experience. A fantastic staff and lovely decor that sets the hotel apart from others that seem to be made of the cookie-cutter hotel/motel model. An off-beat place to stay in Phoenix to make your stay just a little more enjoyable.

A quirky, remodeled older hotel.
Bob Oct 20, 2009
We arrived late at night and had difficulty recognizing the hotel as it is poorly signed. It looked like an apartment block. ... The one bedroom suite was large but the decor was not our taste. Bright orange walls, red velour furniture and blue carpet. The rooms all face the pool which means some noise from guests and cleaning staff. The telephone and internet are free but worked intermittently. You had to go to the lobby, restaurant or pool to receive consistant internetOn the plus side the beds were very comfortable, the toiletries were high class and even the supplied in room coffee was gourmet. The rooms were spacious. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The restaurant was good if you like mexican food. The pool area was good but not large and would be crowded if the hotel was full. Free newspapers. Free easy parking. Close to the light rail allowing cheap easy access to the basketball and baseball stadiums. [...]

Phoenix Hidden Gem
Niko Oct 1, 2009
I'm a 'foodie' and heard about the hotel restaurant Gallo Blanco and wanted to try it. The hotel is going through what ... appears to be a substantial renovation although there was no disruption to my stay. As a smaller property parking is very convenient, rooms accessible and the restaurant offers breakfast, lunch and dinner with excellent beers and cocktails. The reception staff were friendly and efficient with the exception of an error on times of restaurant hours which caused a minor inconvenience to me. They said breakfast opened at 7 am, I arranged to meet a business associate the next day at 7:30 only to learn that the restaurant changed its morning hours to 8 am. No coffee service so we sat around the pool for 45 minutes. As the restaurant operates independently of the hotel they do not accept room charges. I found this out after checking in, changing into swim attire and only carrying my room key - no wallet or cash - ordering a drink to enjoy by the pool and being told no room charges accepted. I went back up to the room, opened the in room safe, got a credit card and returned to enjoy a very good margarita. I don't like having cash or credit cards around the pool as there are many beautiful distractions and I don't want to have to keep one eye on my chair while lounging in the water. The rooms are 'trendy' minimalist - really disliked that the bathroom has only one switch for ceiling vent fan and light. I wanted to relax in the tub and read a book but the fan noise drove me out. Beds and linens were great, oversized tv, small refrigerator with only water for sale. They warned NOT to bring your own alcoholic beverages into the hotel. Interesting bust of Don Bolles in the lobby with the story of demise while at the hotel adds historical character.

A short walk from the hotel is the new train line through central Phoenix. Leave your car at the hotel and enjoy the ballpark, basketball arena, area restaurants and shops. Along the way I spotted several restaurants I wanted to try and also did some shopping. A great place for a very casual lunch in Pane Bianco - owned and operated by those from Pizza Bianco.

While I was at this hotel I toured the city and sight saw. I looked for employment and housing. I also traveled to San Diego. ... To make my stay more comfortable. I would have liked to have a microwave in my room, been able to bring alchol to my room, less cosmetic issues, more information about things to do around town and nightlife and movie channels. This was my first trip and I thought it was great. The hotel agents were pleasant and very courteous. The hotel was overall quiet most evenings.

I came into Phoenix on short notice for an interview and booked the Clarendon because it was centrally located, looked a ... little different than the big chain hotels, and didn't seem to have that air of snobbery you get out in Scottsdale. I was a little unsure as to what the quality of the hotel would be because of its ridiculously low price, but I think that price was based on the ungodly heat of July. What sold me on the Clarendon ultimately... was the phone. At the Clarendon you get free unlimited use of your room telephone nationally AND INTERNATIONALLY. This has to be HUGE for business travelers as I literally spent over an hour on the phone each night with my wife who was in Mexico. That said, I was sold on the Clarendon before I got there because of the phone, but after staying there I'm sold because the rooms are great (modern, kitschy), the rooftop lounge is fantastic as long as there is no lightning, and the pool is one of the coolest I have seen. The only thing I would recommend is not to get your hopes up about the Mexican restaurant in the Hotel... it's bland and overpriced, though well presented and attempting at authentic. One note: the hotel is gay-owned, operated and VERY gay-friendly... which explains why the place looks so cool. This may be a plus or minus for some potential visitors.
