The capital hotel was borne of an idea of what the greatest sort of luxury hotel could be in the late 1800s. Sporting-of all things-an elevator large enough to bear a guest and his horse upstairs- a state-of-the-art communications system -the magnetic annunciator- and proudly displaying the first electric light fixture to be found in a hotel in the south- a local matron declared the hotel a capital enterprise located in a capital building. The name stuck.
The capital was a beacon to southern culture in its day and over the decades was continuously reinvented to characterize the very best of the south for each time. Today is no different. A family of third-generation arkansans has lovingly renovated and refreshed this grand lady- and our management and staff are devoted to bringing a new capital idea to guests. Having recruited renowned chefs and expert hoteliers- the capital today revisits southern hospitality and serves as the launching pad for a new interpretation of southern foodways- created and called by executive chef lee richardson- new americana cuisine. One can say its the latest of the capital ideasthat have animated the hotel since it arrived on the scene in antebellum little rock.

In 1673 the first european explorers to travel through the arkansas river wilderness encountered the friendly quapaw indians. Nine years later the famed la salle expedition landed at la petite roche the little rock that rested along the wild banks of the arkansas. Both french and spanish expeditions followed but even as late as 1819 when the arkansas territory was created the little rock area was still little more than a wilderness. The graceful bluffs of la petite roche did not go unnoticed for long. Little rock became the seat of the new territorial government in 1821 and in 1831 was incorporated as a city. In 1836 little rock became the capital of the state of arkansas.

Charming, Historic Boutique Hotel

What a great hotel! The absolute best in all of Arkansas. Service was impeccable...all staff knowing your name and eager to ... help to make your stay enjoyable! Absolute gorgeous hotel and guest rooms with an amazing history. VERY reasonably priced for the quality. Only drawback was room service menu not extensive for 24 hour dining and no coffee in room. Capital Grill, in house dining, was fabulous and great atmosphere! Will definitely ONLY stay here when traveling to Little Rock.

The dinner at Ashley's was awesome, the staff was very friendly and helpful. The location was perfect for a night downtown, ... all the attractions are in walking distance.
