Great Stay

Staff was friendly and informative, from the front desk to the room attendants. Location is ideal if you are there for 5-points restaurants or bars but still convenient to the medical community and university as well. Rooms are not huge but are spacious and really well appointed......and include free WiFi, which has become a bit of a perk these days. We will not consider staying anywhere else on our next visit, regardless of the rate.

Fuego Cantina, it looks a little sketchy where food is concerned but the tacos are top notch and travel well (We got ours to go.).

Not a Boutique Hotel

Room smelled of cleaning agents my wife had a head ache every time we walked into the room. We knew it was the room because she would feel ok 2 hours after leaving room. Ice machines on all floors were out of order. Call quest services for ice they never showed up . I went down to the bar to get it my self. The WIFI never worked. We have stayed in Boutique Hotels all over the world, this is not the experience we were looking for on our 2nd wedding anniversary .

Perfect location and beautifully redone old hotel

Staff was great, rooms were great, and the location was awesome. The free breakfast was like every free breakfast at a hotel, which isn't great. But, there was a pancake restaurant across the street. I would definitely go again.

Wonderful Stay with One Surprise

I came to Birmingham for a weekend with friends and the Bal Masque Ball and stayed at this wonderful hotel [...]. The hotel was clean, the rooms larger than expected and the service was wonderful. One unexpected surprise was the live music in the hotels lounge on saturday night. Pianist Shaun Pezant, bassist Richard Moteno and vocalist Elnora Spencer delivered a classy evening of live blues and jazz. i will definitely stay at this wonderful Five Points bargain again.

Nightlife tip: In Hotel

Saturday night at the H-Bar at the Hotel Highland brought pianist Shaun Pezant, bassist Richard Moteno and vocalist Elnora Spencer. Her voice was at once Diana, Ella and Ertha and it was a fantastic, unexpected blues and jazz surprise.

So so

I like old hotels, and this one definitely meets that criteria. It has been updated however the décor chosen does not work very well, everything seems out of place. My room on the third floor had two broken lamps, lipstick on the "sanitized glasses", mildew clearly visible in the bathroom. They have a live band on Friday nights which you can hear from the third floor, though it is not too bad. Most importantly, the bed was well above average, so I would very likely stay there again. Sadly the neglect issues have become the norm for hotels these days. Also, the Continental breakfast met the minimum standard, coffee was lousy, plan on going out for breakfast you will only have to walk one block to a Starbucks or local pancake joint.

1 night stay

Wife and I used this hotel because it is located close to a special restaurant we occasionally go for dinner. It is not in the best area of Birmingham...I was hit on for money while getting out of my car. The common areas of the hotel are in need of attention. Although the hotel is old, the room was very good...art decco style. No heat control in the room which is a pain.

The bad, ugly and dirty!!!

The room was clean. We had to request a remote for the tv, that took over two hours, they forgot our request. The outside area surrounding the hotel and the parking area provided by the hotel, was very very dirty and the overall appearance of the neighborhood was bleak!!! It was advertised as the historic area and where it was happening and it was quite the opposite. Oh, they partied in the bar, in the lobby and outside the hotel. Definitely not a family place.

Excellent Choice

I was visiting Birmingham for just one night in order to attend a meeting at the UAB School of Nursing. This was an excellent choice due to great location. It was exactly as described online. The rooms were very comfortable and cute. I was very pleased to find HBO offered free, as well as free internet. I would definitely stay here again.

Time-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

If you have any business at the UAB campus, this is an excellent place to stay. Also, there is a parking garage right behind the hotel that I paid only $2 for overnight parking.
