great location to UAB, perfect for me

I went to visit my son who is attending UAB. I was orginally going to stay at the Medical Center Inn, but the reviews were ... bad-- Iam so glad I swithched to the Highland Hotel--very artistically charming and unpretencious. Location couldn't have been better for my needs. Lots of restuarants right out the door. There is however no free parking, so did most exploring by foot. Comfortable and safe stay.

I took a short drive to Vulcan Park--a nice view of the city. I also took the Dart-- a cute streetcar that has 3 routes to see downtown and other areas nearby for only 25 cents.

Cool, interesting hotel at great 5 Points location. Internet connection (wireless) was very unreliable on this trip ... (previous trip it was ok). Parking at $18/day is high plus you have to use a valet (tips). I would still stay at this hotel though. Staff is friendly, decor is cool, and at night they have live music in their lounge. For some reason however, at 10:30 PM, some loud music comes from some source (nearby clubs?) and is a little annoying when trying to sleep but the windows do block out a good deal of it. Their breakfast is decent too.

Surin West is just around the corner. It's a Thai restaurant and sushi bar. The absolute best sushi ever! The service is awesome and friendly. Very upscale restaurant with awesome prices. Don't miss it!

There's a parking lot immediately behind the hotel. If you're planning to spend the evening around five points, then 4 bucks in their lot beats the valet - but no "in and out" as that's 4 bucks a pop.

The Highland

The valet was a nice guy and the front desk clerk ([...]) was cool too. They suggested a great place to eat and were really ... friendly. They asked about our visit and what we were there for and really seemed to be quite genuine. The Highland Hotel has the most comfortable beds and pillows on the planet! The faucets were a little hard to get used to, but otherwise an awesome place with great local food and places to hang out.

This hotel was not that great at all, the location was bad. There were homeless people walking around the building I did not ... feel safe walking to local restaurants nearby. The exercise equipment is old and outdated. I would recommend staying at a national chain such as Marriott etc.

A nice little metropolitan boutique hotel in Lil' Ol' Birmingham. Walking distance to great dining. Friendly staff, the room ... was a little on the small side, but still bigger than a New York hotel at 1/3rd the price. Went there for a quick overnight getaway, and this place fit the bill to a tee.

We were in town for a convention at the Jefferson Civic Center, 1.8 miles away. So convenient! Beautifully located on a hilly ... tree-lined street. Pretty view from the window. Happened to be 4th of July weekend...watched fireworks from room. Public parking probably would not have been a problem had it not been a holiday. Had to pay $18.00 for valet. Room was very clean. No iron but they brought one soon. Staff was very nice. And a really nice breakfast selection with GREAT coffee. Slight old, cigarette-y smell in lobby and elevator but none in room. Would gladly come back and stay longer.

Highland Hotel

The parking garage is next door to the hotel, and without a room key you have to go all the way around the block to the front ... door, unless you're willing to pay for the valet parking. Since it was raining hard this was a real pain. The thermostat in the room was set on 50F and the room was like an icebox. Other than that we had a great stay and I would highly recommend this hotel for a fun weekend or longer. There are plenty of good restaurants and bars within a block of the hotel so once we got parked we didn't use the car for 2 days.

Enjoyed our stay but Birmingham needs some serious city planning for the streets. Very difficult to navigate. Hotel Highland ... was very nice. [...] is still working there and found her to be very nice. The entire staff was very friendly and the lady at the martini bar treated us to a free drink....something nice she came up with. Would visit this hotel again.

On a recent business trip I stayed at the Hotel Highland. I loved the renovated old hotel with its modern updates and ... relaxing atmosphere. It was comfortable and clean. I was within walking distance to everything I needed: restaurants and shops. I enjoyed the friendliness of the hotet clerk, martini bar bartender and the valet attendant. They all made my stay more enjoyable. I will definately stay there again.

Hotel Highland at Five Points was a very stylish boutique-type hotel. The decor was sophisticated, modern art-deco. The ... furnishings were very comfortable. The bathroom was great - shower, towels and the stuff they give you for free. The staff at check-in, the lobby bar, and others were warm and helpful. The area is near several good restaurants, a Starbucks and bookstore. I was delighted with the whole experience, since I like urban hotels.

The room was better than we imagined, the linens and furnishing were wonderful. Valet parking was great and picking up the ... car the next morning was no problem. The staff makes sure that your stay is the best it can be. I would tell anyone that this is the place to stay in Birmingham.

If you are looking for a hotel with great dining options nearby this is a very good spot. The rooms are not huge, but, ... comfortable. The bed was quite nice. There are parts of the building, such as the elevator, and plumbing, that leave much to be desired... The staff was great.

Great Location and Great Hotel
Michael Jul 28, 2008
The Hotel Highland was wonderful. Located in a very eclectic part of Birmingham, it was very easy to walk (about a half a ... block) to some wonderful restaurants. The staff was friendly and very insightful on the area. The rooms are very nice and even has an ipod alarm clock and a flat screen tv. The only negative i can saw about the hotel is there wasn't a pool (or at least we couldn't find it) But the fitness room and easy parking on the back side of the hotel was easy in-and-out with just your room key. Overall, great hotel, great staff, and great location. A must stay if ever in Birmingham!

Great Location and staff... Hotel Mainenance leaving much to be desired
Scott Jun 6, 2008
As stated in the title, I really liked the location and staff. I did have an ongoing problem with the plumbing in the ... shower, in which my first two days were spent taking scalding hot showers, the last two talking freezing cold showers. The problem was finally fixed by changing a relic of an adapter in the shower plumbing. The other thing that really bothers me is the high rate charge for parking. In all fairness, I have seen this in one other Birmingham hotel, but, come on...$18 per night..when a hotel, in my mind, should have parking..... That being said, I would stay in this hotel again....complain about the parking charge though..

We arrived at 12:30am on a Sunday morning and could not believe the activity going on outside this hotel. This was a big ... party area and there was no parking on the street. We did the valet parking. It was like a different world when you went in. BEAUTIFUL!! The staff was wonderful and our room was so nice. The entire hotel was art deco from the 1920's. Very different and very nice. Just seemed out of place. The beds were very comfortable. Neat hotel!!

A bit of local history
Sheri Aug 17, 2007
The Hotel Highland at Five Points was a very comfortable hotel to stay in. You can tell it is a historical building but the ... renovations bring it up to more modern standards. Hotel elevator and forced Valet parking were my only hesitations at the hotel. Best part was the bed, Very comfortable! The staff went out of their way to make me feel comfortable and welcome. I would stay at the hotel again when I am in Birmingham.

Constantina Jul 25, 2007
They just renovated and so there were a few kinks (they didn't know where the ethernet plug was, the desk staff didn't know ... how to work a few things) but they were very accommodating and eager to please. The free internet was a great plus (i'm tired of paying through the nose for something that costs hotels very little, and that nearly all travellers require), as was the large tv and comfy beds. you pay 18 dollars a night for parking, which is kind of silly since it's birmingham and not new york. it was very clean and modern, they had new everything, and there were a lot of thoughtful touches (like a bottle of water in the room, breakfast service downstairs with teas laid out all night, etc., good toiletries provided). big room too.
