Alaska Backpacker's Inn is Anchorage's newest backpacker's hostel. We are located in Downtown Anchorage only a few minutes walking distance from all that downtown has to offer. We are right around the corner from the train and Alaska direct bus stations. The hostel contains 80 beds broken into small dorms (No more than 6 beds per dorm) as well as private rooms. Private rooms include cable TV (80 channels plus showtime) and micro-fridges in each room. 2-share dorms have micro-fridges as well. Other facilities include cable TV in a large common area which also has a Foosball table, vending machines, reading room, kitchen, lots of clean spacious shared bathrooms, plus much more. This summer we are very exited to announce that have taken on the challenge of providing more private rooms due to the high demand! We will be offering updated rooms with an urban feel in our Annex building (less than one block away on the same street). We are now providing full one bedroom private suites with full kitchens and bathrooms. Our Annex building is in the midst of transforming this summer into a sister hostel for ABI. In the process, we have given all the rooms their own temperature (heat only) control gauge for individual comfort. With growth comes excitement and sometimes a bit of confusion. We look forward to and thank you for your business and patronage this summer. We are striving to meet as many of your needs as an economical and traveler friendly hostel can.

This place is in a great location, blocks to downtown Anchorage and most things you want to do, which is great. I was able to walk every place including train station, food, tourist shops, Tony Knowles Coastal Trail and its blocks from bike
rentals. It was fine staying here especially for the price, but I could not recommend it to all people. I felt safe enough there but because it is on the cheaper end you get people from all walks of life, but you should expect this from a Hostel vs a 5 star hotel. If you have lower expectations you should be okay and overall it was “fine”. One issue was I had expected to have a private room, kitchen and bathroom; however it was only a private room. Sharing my bathroom was actually fine (but bring sandals) as I never saw the person, but I think the description of the amenities were a bit misleading. From the write up given, I expected to have my own bathroom so was surprised when I did not. The thing that did bother me and would bother many people was the smell in the room. A nicer room that did not smell would have made the trip more pleasant but on the other hand a nicer room would have been double the price and limited my ability to do other fun activities. If you can get over the smell, which you did get used to once you were there for a few minutes then you will be okay… or bring an air freshener! I would bring ear plugs, or you can buy them there for 50 cents along with other hygiene products, which was nice. The staff was friendly. I was able to check in late into the night, have them hold my bags before my flight and they called a taxi for me. I might stay here again if I were traveling alone because of the price, however if I was traveling with someone I would book a more expensive nicer room and split the cost.
