Great hotel, even better staff

Would recommend Sun, Aug 30, 2015
Our experience in this hotel was very positive. It is in a historic building and the location couldn't be better. In spite of the age of the building, they have done a great job adapting it to a modern hotel. The rooms were very nice and clean and the staff was responsive, kind, helpful and resourceful. The room service food was surprisingly good! The only hiccup was the fact that despite the no-smoking policy of the hotel there were guests smoking in another room. However, the staff hotel was very responsive on this issue and they eventually switched us to another room. Overall I would recommend this hotel.

Good for Cruise Ships but poor otherwise

Would not recommend Thu, Jul 9, 2015
Pleasant and helpful staff, but poor room which seemed to us to be a large single which they classed as a double i.e not a full double bed etc. Could do with complete refurb. Also had to pay £5 parking which made the room cost far too high for the quality offered. Sash windows would not stay open. All round a poor experience considering the good standard normally enjoyed in a Mercure hotel.

Good location

Would recommend Sun, Oct 13, 2013
The room we had was small, but okay for one night. It was very hot in the room and the window could not be opened. There was a table fan. The bathroom was small, too and the shower was difficult. We complained to the front desk and were told to ask for a better room next time. This must be what they give Orbitx customers as it appeared there were many other better rooms. It is an historic hotel in an interesting and historic city.

Pleasant old town hotel. Close to everything. Shopping for Xmas was excellent and it was close to the cruise terminal as well as the coach terminal.

Dolphin Safe

Would not recommend Wed, Oct 13, 2010
The Mercure Southampton Center, AKA the Dolphin, was a home base, a no frills hotel. While there was nothing wrong with the hotel per se it wouldn't be an establishment I'd return to. Located near the docks and the Bargate it was convenient to shops and historical interests. I would suggest not eating in the hotel's restaurant as it is grossly overpriced compared to it's quality and offerings. For breakfast eat 2 doors down. Do not be surprised NOT to find alarm clocks as this is a normal practice in England, however, it's rather frustrating.
