A good value near Heathrow

We were looking for somewhere near Heathrow to extend our London trip by another couple of days without spending a lot of money. All it needed was to be clean, close and comfortable. It was very clean (appeared to have been recently remodeled as of Aug 2013) and reasonably comfortable. The staff was quite friendly and helpful. It's not loaded with amenities, though there is a cafe in the lobby and a bar that's open 24 hours a day (!) As for close... We discovered from reading other reviews that it helps to plan a little if you can. The Hotel Hoppa buses run on a regular schedule from Heathrow terminal 5 (which has connections to fast rail into the city and to the Underground) and are reasonably priced (by airport standards) BUT...they do have a cut-off time and it's worth finding out when they stop running. We missed the last bus one evening and discovered that some of the cabs weren't interested in giving up their place in the taxi queue for a short, unprofitable run. However, a quick call to the front desk provided us with the number to a car service that came and got us for no more than a regular taxi. Problem solved. Also, it's worth buying your tickets on the Hoppa at the hotel, as it will save you a little more money. A destination hotel it is not. But it is close to the airport and other ground transportation, it's well-maintained and the staff is quite good. All in all, it was pretty much just what we were looking for. I will remember this the next time I'm at Heathrow for an over-nighter.

Travelodge T5

Needed a value hotel by Heathrow and that's exactly what we got. When you pull up first impressions aren't great but once your in your room you can't complain - nice and clean with good air con! Didn't use the bar/eating area as we ate on the way.

Usual difficulties

If you take a cab, it will cost 30 pounds for you, and you know why? Because the hotel is not toward London, but to the other direction. If you pay with a credit card, additional 10 pounds. It is stupid, but no-ne tells you: there is a bus leaving right outside Terminal 5, I forgot the number, call up the hotel and they will tell you. And that is 4.5 pounds.

Average accommodation

This hotel is fine for a one night stay, especially if you have an early start. Just a 10 minute Hoppa Bus ride from Heathrow Terminal 5. Very handy and fairly reasonably priced. It would have been cheaper for the bus ticket if the ticket machine in the hotel was working, but sadly it wasn't. The trouble with this hotel is that there are too many add ons to pay for. They should think about making the general cost of your stay all inclusive. I had to pay quite a bit extra for breakfast, car park and the Hoppa Bus. Breakfast was a disappointment! Continental cost the same as cooked breakfast which shocked me. It was very uninspiring with dry croissant plan bread jam, not much choice of fruit and no muesli. Coffee was ok. The staff were great and very accommodating. One word of warning is that there were a number of very loud customers there.

Good for overnight before or after flight

Exactly as expected - no frills but then didn't pay for frills. Convenient for Heathrow - good pleasant staff and surprisingly good food! Served our purpose.

The biggest cheating

1. They advertise: the hotel is only a short drive from the airport. But: you have to take the black cabs, and the price is 45 British pounds (plus 10%, if you pay with a credit card; but if you decide the change some money at the airport, the same price, the exchange rate is outrageous at the airport; and of course, the cab is 45 pounds the next morning back to the airport). Of course, at the cab station they don't tell you that take the local cab, that's only 15 pounds. 2. The cab drivers don't know where the hotel is, it took the guy 45 minutes to find it, despite the fact that I gave him the phone number as well. 3. The ATM machine does not work in the hotel (at least not for overseas, i.e., US credit cards) 4. The TV does not work in the room 5. The hotel does not change money. If you did not change money at the airport, do whatever you want to do. 6. But there is a tourist desk at the airport in the terminal: DON'T TRY IT: they are happy to give you a room (the cab fare is included), but the price is 300 POUNDS PER NIGHT. 7. Conclusion: don't spend a night in London when you are coming back from another European city. I know, this is not easy, because American Airlines changed all the schedules (so that it will be cheaper for them) so that you would have to spend a night in London. Second conclusion: take UNITED.
