Days Inn Oxford M40

Location is very handy for Oxford, but I was surprised to be in a smoking room (I didn't realise it was still possible to smoke in hotels). Everything else was fine except the shower - it seemed impossible to have water any warmer than tepid.

We had booked a room that was meant to be suitable for 4 people. This room was not suitable and fortunately there was only three of us. The room was a smoking room which we had asked for non-smoking and was very small. We felt the receptionist was either having a bad day or was not enjoying her job and felt that we did not want to ask even if we could change rooms. Considering the location it was a quiet room. There was no soap left in the shower and only two sets of towels in a room booked for 4.

For what it is, a good sleep-over and ideal as a stopping off point on a long or difficult journey. Motorway resturant and all that that means next door. Complicated one way system in the service area and signposting poor - almost non-existent. Book in staff helpful but being a lodge no other service was needed or available. Failed to give the agreed 6.00am wake-up call.

The staff were warm, friendly and helpful. There was a broken handle to the window in our room so the window could not be locked. We were two ladies and on a ground floor so we did not feel safe. It was a none smoking room and the only other available room was a smoking room on the first floor. My companion has bad legs! There was no hot water on both evenings, so we had to wait for them to sort out the problem. This made us late for our meeting with friends on both nights. The staff did all they could to help. I would have asked for a full refund, but I had booked through a agent, so I had paid them. I would have liked to think we would have benn offered a voucher as way of an apology. It is the first time I have used a Days Inn. The thought of paying to stay again if I was to experience the same low standard of accomodation is not what I would do or promote to friends.

Hotel is directly on the highway - so it's similar to staying at a hotel on I95. It is attached to a "Welcome Break" equivalent to a service center in the states. We only used it as a one-night stay while touring Oxford and the surrounding areas. Categorizing it as in Oxford is somewhat of a stretch since it's outside of the city by a bit. Having said that the staff was helpful and the continental breakfast was delivered on-time and was good.
