Located in the historic quarter of Norwich city centre, opposite the famous Norman cathedral, the Maids Head is believed to be the oldest hotel in the UK. Dating back to the 12th century, it is rumoured that Queen Elizabeth I and Catherine of Aragon have been among its many guests. Today, it offers both contemporary and period character bedrooms, all with free Wi-Fi and satellite TV. Norwich Castle, The Forum and Norwich Market are a short walk away. The award-winning WinePress@Wensum Restaurant serves fine food, with 40 wines available by the glass. The hotel has its own tapas bar and a Jacobean snug bar, once patronised by Horatio Nelson. Free on-site parking. Classic British Hotels (CB) - the largest, upscale collection of quality, independent hotels in the UK

Shearings posh

Great location, on the edge of The Lanes and in a quiet area. The hotel has been refurbished, but our room seemed to have bypassed the process and could have done with a bit of refreshing. That said, it was comfortable and quiet. We didn't have breakfast included and weren't offered discounted breakfast vouchers at check-in which is a missed opportunity for the hotel. However, I'd skip it and go to the Weatherspoon's next door where everything is prepared fresh to order.

Nightlife tip: Short walk from hotel

We fell into Cavell's on the Friday night and found ourselves gravitating there all weekend! A really friendly bar with a mixed crowd.

Nice but noisy

Clean, comfy room; great hotel; friendly staff. The only thing that bothered me was that I could hear everything that was going on in the rooms around me and I was kept up half the night by what seemed to be all the pigeons of Norwich gathering on my window ledge. This was probably isolated to the room I was in though. Other than that, no problems.

Good at the price

This hotel is superbly located. It sprawls and lacks air con, so rooms can get on the hot and stuffy side if you like your fresh air (our windows hardly opened - presumably for health and safety reasons). Apart from that, this was great value at e-bookers rates. The restaurant is a bit pricey, but there are plenty of others within walking distance. Bar is also pricey, but there are plenty of good pubs nearby (and a JD Wetherspoons next door!)

City Centre Gem

Car Parking free was a great incentive for booking this hotel, easy to find right by the cathedral. Frindly staff.
