awful

Was told upgraded to a deluxe room for £10 extra this was an utter joke there was nothing deluxe about any aspect of this hotel. The room was tiny and beyond shabby with broken plug sockets and furniture. The windows were about 8 ft in the air so you couldnt reach to open them made worse by the whole hotel smelling like macaroni cheese!! The service was questionable and we were made to feel like intruders rather than paying guests.

Overnight stay

This was a cheaper alternative to taking a taxi back to Wilmslow on a Friday night and for that it worked, however, the hotels is very tired and the bed uncomfortable. There is also quite alot of noise outside from street cleaners and bin waggons BUT it was cheap and did the job!

Interesting place, but ...

A fascinating building in a central location. Plenty of interesting places to see with an excellent tourist office nearby. Endless choice for eating and drinking. Everything for all ages. Check the weather - it's Manchester! All staff were friendly and helpful. The only grouse was that my wife and I were locked out of our room for an hour and a half when we were off to bed. The room had to be broken into eventually and we had to change rooms. All staff involved were really helpful and cheerful. However, with the change of staff on the morning shift, there was no mention of the incident. It didn't merit an apology from the management and probably hadn't been reported. I think that was a pity!

Decent value, location

Was in Manchester mainly to attend a music festival at the Royal Northern College of Music, so from that standpoint the location wasn't perfect: about a mile walk. On the other hand, this hotel is close to decent pubs, restaurants and shopping as well as an intermediate walk to features like the Manchester Cathedral. Lifts are small and slow but adequate in this renovated property; regular rooms (I stayed in a 2-bed twin) are small but negotiable. Sound can travel between rooms but I only noticed this a couple of times during a four-night stay. One concern: was unable to control temperature in room, which was consistently hot - wound up leaving window open during entire stay (in January, no less). Due to the presence of nearby nightlife, am curious as to whether street noise on weekend nights would become an issue during warmer weather. Overall, considering I did not spend much time in the room beyond sleeping, I thought the hotel provided an overall positive experience. It is not a luxury hotel but it is seemingly well-kept and tidy.

Shopping tip: Short walk from hotel

This hotel is very close to a Primark; as a "Yank" this was my first experience with this store and I was surprised at the abundance of inexpensive merchandise. We're not talking top-of-the-line goods here, but if you're in need of decent clothing on the cheap, you could do worse. Other shopping opportunities, ranging from tea to electronics and everything in between, abound within a 5-10 minute walk.
