An old and tired hotel

This is an historic hotel in a very central location. It is an old property in several important aspects: The floors are uneven and creak badly throughout the building. Most of the doors squeek. Walls are paper thin and fixtures are outdated (our travelling companions were in a room with updated fixtures). The elevator is slow and small for the 4 floors it must service.

The underground can be accessed at Victoria station 2 blocks away and will get you almost anywhere quickly. All day pass is available for a little over 7 pounds.

Rubens - Nice but a bit overrated

The location is OK, but as we discovered there are other sections of London that would be even better for tourists. The hotel accommodations are a bit mixed. Very nice public areas downstairs (e.g., restaurants, bar). The room we stayed in was a King room and was cramped (though I guess this is usual for Europe). Not enough space for luggage and clothes for a long stay. The bathroom was decently appointed, but also small. And the half-plexiglass door on the bathtub/shower allowed water from the shower to spray everywhere. No way to stop it. They need to do some upgrading to the rooms. I don't see this as a four-star establishment. 3.5 stars at best. Not a great value proposition.

Very near the Victoria station, with access to the tube (subway) and various trains. Reasonable shopping nearby and not far from the great stores (like Harrad's) in Kensington.

Nice hotel well situated

Checked into room early no prob. Nice surprise. Very good service from all employees. Around corner from Buckingham Palace. Room very nice...amenities, solid, quiet. Walk to West. Abbey and other sites. Located in largely bus district so quiet neighborhood at night and esp weekends. Did not use hotel restaurant. Restaurants nearby - OK.

Excellent Location, Friendly Staff

Located close to Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Green Park, Hyde Park, Victoria Train Station and many more tourist attractions. The staff is very informative and friendly. The rooms are a little small by american standards but I wouldn't let that stop me from staying there again.

wonderful location

We've stayed at Rubens several times -- you can't beat the location across from Palace and the staff and furnishings are quite nice. We booked a modest queen bed and got wonderful king overlooking the Royal Mews. I was, however, very surprised there was no mattress pad/cover under the bottom sheet... and I was really surprised to see a stained (albeit firm)mattress under the sheet. Probably a housekeeping oversight.. Check if out BEFORE 11pm

Great Location

Although the room was quite small (we upgraded to a larger queen room!), it was clean and well decorated. The bedding was very comfortable. The service was excellent. We had a fabulous (but quite expensive) dinner in the hotel restaurant. We found a couple of neat little cafe's in the area where we had breakfast most days. The breakfast at the hotel was "OK" but not worth the price.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Buy an Oyster card and use the Tube. Victoria Station is a 5 minute walk and from there you can get just about anywhere in the city. The subway was well mapped and easy to navigate. It was the cleanest subway system we have ever experienced.
